Google's Android OS is still showing excellent growth in smartphone market share, actually topping Apple's iPhone in new purchases for the first half of 2010, according to market researcher, Nielsen.

In the first six months of 2010, Google gained 27% of new phone purchases, bettering the iPhone's 23%, but still trailing Blackberry's 33% market share. The Apple iPhone is still the most desired smartphone for future purchases, ahead of both Google and Blackberry.

One of the many reasons I got rid of my Mac was because it phoned home constantly. Data packets. Apple mined my default email address in one. Much of the info was code and probably usage statistics (I never looked into that stuff). Why would they be sending my email address back to their servers?

Absolutely untrue. I run an application named " Little Snitch". It shows my Mac is completely locked down. It sends NOTHING back to Apple except when it checks for updates to the software. You can check and see what ports are or not open. If Apple were "mining"such data in contravention of customer privacy, they would be hauled into court right and left. They aren't. He'll, I'd sue them!

Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics. We'll hear both sides, and they'll both be right, depending on the scope and angle of the stats, and the exact wording of the sentence.

The Apple iPhone is still the most desired smartphone for future purchases, ahead of both Google and Blackberry.

At some point I'd like to see some consistency in comparisons. They just compared:

"iPhone, Google, Blackberry" are, respectively, a phone model, a company that makes a free operating system*, and a phone manufacturer. Apples and oranges, anyone?

* 1. More correctly, Google is the major developer in a consortium dedicated to that operating system. 2. The operating system as it is shipped with Android phones is NOT entirely free. 3. The Nexus One has an irrelevant number of sales to matter for this purpose

I have a feeling that Windows 7 Phone will be technically good. However, a recent quote scares me. I know iOS and Android already do ads, but Microsoft has said it considers Windows 7 Phone to be an “ad-serving machine.” How high of a priority is that? How far are they willing to go to make that true?

I’d hate to have a Google phone reporting my every move to the government.

Google was famous a while back for refusing to give data to the government for a fishing expedition, even went to court against the feds. It was MSN and Yahoo who voluntarily bent over backwards and gave DOJ a massive amount of data. AOL partially complied.

Quicktime doesn’t belong on any computer.

The new one does on OS X. It rocks. It even does live screen recording.

That said, I still use VLC for DVDs because it ignores the stupid mandatory clips and images. VLC is also the basis for the encoding ability of Handbrake, the best software around for turning a DVD movie into an MP4 file (PC or Mac).

So I guess Google only cooperates with communist dictatorships like China, then...
(Which means they’ll be cooperating with the 0bama regime, just not Bush.)

Google does what Google is required to do under the laws of the country. Google defended our privacy here according to the law, which does not allow for DOJ fishing expeditions through private data so it can prove a point in a case not even related to Google.

Likewise, Google was following the laws in China. The ethical question there was whether to operate in China at all given the laws Google would have to follow.

BS. Google was trying to win favor from the ChiComs. They did a lot of evil on the process. Dissidents were disappeared.

To get the recording feature, you need QuickTime Pro. That's $30.

Nope. The QuickTime X that ships with Snow Leopard does it. There is effectively no more QuickTime Pro that I can upgrade to.

BS. Google was trying to win favor from the ChiComs.

Whatever you want to call it, you have to play by their laws to operate in their country. For Google, playing by their laws means getting dissidents disappeared. It was definitely an instance where Google chose profit over not doing evil.

Oh? Is that why Microsoft won't publish the keys to how to access their DRM in Windows Media Player 10 and 11 so that other platforms can also access it?

Why is it that Apple pushes industry OPEN standard file formats like H.264 and HTML5 to replace the CLOSED standard of proprietary Adobe Flash, which is responsible for many of the CRASHES that occur on Internet Explorer, FireFox, Google Chrome, and Safari as well as many other browsers. In addition, because of inherent design paradigms in Flash, it simply DOES NOT WORK on touch screen devices. Flash expects, and in fact the vast majority of existing Flash apps on the Internet, require certain types of inputs to work. Flash wants mouse-over, mouse-button clicks, and keyboard key strokes, all of which a touch-screen device cannot provide because they do not have those input devices, opting instead to use the screen, without a pointer, for the input device. Flash is also a huge resource hog. On a desktop, that's not too much of a problem, but on a portable device with limited resources and on batteries, Flash's overhead is too great and open standard substitutes like H.264 video which offers a higher resolution video and HTML5. So, yes, I have heard of Flash, a buggy, proprietary, CLOSED, non-standard Internet gaming/scripting/advertising pushing "standard" owned by a single company for their profit, which they make by selling the Flash creation software.

Just recently, a version of Flash was released for Android. Buggy, it crashes and still drains the battery rapidly.

Apple's OSX is UNIX. OPEN. Apple publishes the source code for much of it's application and kernel software openly... including those portions of UNIX which Apple owns. OPEN. Apple has continually pushed for the removal of DRM from the music it sells. iTunes sells DRM free music. Apple is working on the studios to do the same thing for TV and Movies. Meanwhile Microsoft agreed to charge extra to pay the Music publishers for every Zune it sold because its customers MUST be pirates who would put stolen music on the Zune. Apple refused. OPEN.

I suggest you don't know what you are talking about. . . And are just repeating talking points you've heard.

Windows is notorious for making the lowest end OS for the lowest end PCs, charging the most for it, and leaving compatibility, viruses, and issues to the "manufacturers" and to "Third Party Software developers".

Apple makes the most robust, user friendly, virus free OS at the lowest cost, for the best top of the line hardware at comparable pricing.

VERY VERY Stark difference!

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Perhaps you forgot all the anti green attacks in the press BEFORE Al Gore had a seat on the board?

Also, ANYONE can have a seat on ANY Board if they buy enough stock. What is stopping you?
