Bob Krause hates Thanksgiving, and not because of that all forced family time.
Krause, 63, calls himself a picky eater -- one who won't eat anything that's served at a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, or any other dinner, for that matter.
Krause survives on little more than grilled cheese sandwiches, French fries and waffles. And, like other picky eaters, Krause hopes that a registry of adult picky eaters, recently begun by Duke University and the University of Pittsburgh, will bring attention to a problem he believes should be considered a medical condition.
The registry, dubbed the Food F.A.D. Study, or the Finicky Eating in Adults study, has already attracted more than 2,000 participants. According to its website, the survey and registry was created to learn more about adults who describe themselves as picky eaters.

I met a British lad about 19 that would not touch a vegetable or fruit in any way, he sought out any hidden vegetables in a burger or other foods and made sure there was none, except for french fries, (but not potatoes in a more vegetable form).
He stayed with us for maybe a couple of weeks and I searched for something that he might overlook or not count in his strict anti vegetable, anti fruit eating, but I never saw anything.
He was already pudgy, doughy, and unhealthy looking at 19, and I tried every way that I could to try and make him aware of scurvy and what I thought was a minimal level of nutrition that one needed to survive, I wasted no effort on promoting eating healthy, like pushing a lot of vegetables, I merely stayed with trying to promote the idea of eating an occasional slice of tomato, or orange, or something, anything, but he was convinced that none of that nutrition stuff was true or necessary and vegetables and fruits repulsed him.
This was 30 years ago and I sometimes wonder what came of him.
So pretty much, you eat everything except salt?
Amen to that. We have friends that are vegetarians, and they really get irritating. We have to cook vegetarian meals for them when they come to dinner, but they won’t cook meat for us. It’s almost not worth the trouble anymore.
Definitely too many carbs for comfort ~ so how about some sashimi? http://www.littlesushiontheprairie.com/Images/sashimi6.jpg
My oldest as a toddler wanted nothing with texture. Baby food only, no solid food.
Our pediatrician thought it strange at 1 year old but thought she would soon want what we were eating in front of her.
At 18 months, he suggested a small amount of milk, only table food and water. He said we would have a miserable day, but she would get over it.
Three days later, she began to eat.
At thirteen she is a wonderful and gifted child, and still a horrible eater.
If a grown man will only eat grilled cheese, fries and waffles he doesn’t have a medical problem, he has a mental problem.
Umm, no you don't HAVE to. You CHOOSE to. If they insist, they aren't really friends in my book.
My nephew in law eats almost the same diet as this guy, grill cheese, quesadilla (grilled cheese with tortilla instead of bread), and cheese pizza. He’s chubby, pail, and not generally healthy. All his family are fussy eaters but his diet is the most absurd. I blame poor parenting, they’ve always had allowances made for their taste in food. When my mom put dinner in front of me that’s what there was to eat, if I didn’t eat it then I got nothing, no post meal snacks if you don’t clean your plate was the number 1 food rule in the household. It’s a rule that’s served me well as an adult, it’s a lot easier to be a good guest when you know how to eat what’s put in front of you even if it sucks, and sometimes you discover some really good foods.
oh my gosh, i am hungry now...
As a broad and general rule from my experience with picky eaters, I would say yes they were coddled and mommy allowed them to pick whatever and whenever they wanted. Obviously, kids can be picky eaters but to let it constantly continue into adulthood is pretty absurd and a disservice to the child.
My daughter cooked special meals for my granddaughter.Sara wouldn’t eat anything the rest of the family ate so mom would rush to the kitchen to make her a meal she would like. She would eat pizza, chicken fingers and fries. She is now 23 years old and still eats chicken fingers, pizza and fries. She doesn’t have many dinner dates because her escorts loathe her eating habits.l told my daughter 20 years ago this would happen.
Kids can be picky, fickle, etc. but you are trying and will probably one day win her over with good food. Most parents just quit and say to themselves it ain’t worth the effort or headaches to actually parent the child and their eating habits. It’s too bad for the kids.
I don’t think people like this have eaten enough foods to have the cravings. If you’ve never had orange juice your body can’t tell you to drink orange juice, it doesn’t know the taste to make you want.
Oh I ate chicken, eggs, cheese and fish...( if I caught the fish..) but zero red meat. Didn't have a hamburger for over 18 yrs...I think.
I never had a problem...going to someone's home...and eating. And they never cooked special for me....the best I can recall.
But if they came to my house to eat....they knew we weren't cooking pork or beef.
Now...I love to cook some meats. Had some awesome venison steaks the other night..And have four very nice beef steaks in the freezer...just waiting to be cooked.
Still eat more chicken and fish...than red meat. But now and again...I like it.
FRegards,
I have a 7 year old grandson who pretty much will only eat waffles, french fries and chicken fingers with an occasional pice of fruit. Believe it or not he went to an eating disorder clinic for kids(paid for by insurance) which said his problem is a highly developed sense of smell. He can gag walking through the cheese department of the supermarket. They worked with him for a few months and failed. It’s very frustrating and no amount of threatening, cajoling or ignoring the situation has helped.
I never allowed that with my kids (we were too poor, anyway). Now, my daughter and her beau have so much fun picking out different places to eat out. Different cuisines. She is actually introducing him to many different things.
I really liked the country when this was not an issue. If this guy is happy with his menu, god bless him. Told my parents I wasn’t eating green veggies after I moved out. Stuck with that for 20yrs except for the occasional Ceaser salad. Steaks and cheeseburgers taste better.
Unfortunately, I’ve known many folks that believe they get their vegetables and fruits from fries, ketchup and skittles.
