We can’t stand it anymore. this was coordinated with the white house to make obama look good. he goes down there, shakes some hands, looks all concerned and comes home to take credit with Bush’s successful plan in Iraq.

“Contrasted with the light Hurricane damage - but destruction of New Orleans because of incompetent management of the levy system”

Corps chief admits to ‘design failure’
Thursday, April 06, 2006
By Bill Walsh
Washington bureau The Times-Picayune

WASHINGTON — In the closest thing yet to a mea culpa, the commander of the Army Corps of Engineers acknowledged Wednesday that a “design failure” led to the breach of the 17th Street Canal levee that flooded much of the city during Hurricane Katrina.

Lt. Gen. Carl Strock told a Senate committee that the corps neglected to consider the possibility that floodwalls atop the 17th Street Canal levee would lurch away from their footings under significant water pressure and eat away at the earthen barriers below.

“We did not account for that occurring,” Strock said after the Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing. “It could be called a design failure.”

A botched design has long been suspected by independent forensic engineers probing the levee failures. A panel of engineering experts confirmed it last month in a report saying the “I-wall” design could not withstand the force of the rising water in the canal and triggered the breach.

But until Wednesday the corps, which designed and oversaw construction of the levees, had not explicitly taken responsibility for the mistake.

“We have now concluded we had problems with the design of the structure,” Strock told members of the subcommittee that finances corps operations. “We had hoped that wasn’t the case, but we recognize it is the reality.”

You're right it would have been a huge disaster no matter what, but what really got me was all the people that acted like the government failed to get their butts out of town. What other disaster victims have acted like that before or since? Why was it the governments job?

The fact that they live 7 feet below sea level AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA.

"Tennesseans immediately started mitigating the flood damage without whining or complaining about lack of help. The caliber of these people is AMAZING. And in contrast.."

There was no "immediately" for those of us who live here. A city with a population of over 400,000, and which was 80% evacuated before the storm, was flooded. Evacuated residents were not allowed to return to homes and businesses for weeks. Over 200,000 properties were damaged or destroyed. Are you judging an entire city and its citizenry based on what you see on television or have read in the print media? If that be the case, your judgement is wrong.

"Though the people in MS and LA seemed to get on with life fairly quickly while there is still a lot of self-pity in N.O."

Yes, you would get that impression if you follow the stories disseminated by the media. You would most probably get a different picture if you personally spoke to a New Orleanian.

"We will the people in LA be taken to task for stealing the levy money. That is what caused all the problems."

How's Nashville doing?

There should be billboards erected at all entrances leading in to the lower 9th ward. They should read:

Model Liberal Community

We have a need so I work 12 to 16 hours a day, no one will give us a damn gov't debit card, no one will close the border but obama that son of a bitch, will give away every tax dollar and then print more............I'm done.

The eye of the storm hit here in Mississippi, Ozero won’t come here.

That's because MS fixed what Katrina had broken rather than sit around and collectively whine about it like the ne'er do wells of NOLA.

I’ve never claimed to be infallible. My coworkers and I were exhorted to volunteer for the Katrina disaster. The rescuers were targets for snipers or whatever you call people who shoot at rescuers. The Tennesseans didn’t try to kill anyone who tried to help, as far as I know. If you can give me information to the contrary, I’d like to know about it. Thanks!

Mila, I’m certain I don’t speak for myself only when I say that my heart went out to the people of Louisiana who were so devastated by Katrina through no fault of their own. I object to the bad behavior of the governing few. The corruption must be eradicated. Please unite w/us to take back our country.

I agree with you overall — have been to n.o. and miss. before and after Katrina. While I agree that its deplorable that miss. hasn’t received the coverage it deserves, keep in mind that n.o. is a big port city with a great history and Waveland, Bay St Louis and PassChr. are small towns that are not well known in the rest of the country.

I’d like a source of the attack on your co-workers so that I can do a little research. In the mean time, you might find the following article interesting.

Not that much damage to affluent homes in n.o. The Garden District was virtually untouched, and the FQ sustained very little damage.
