SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Four people are dead after a crash involving the low cost bus carrier Megabus in the Syracuse suburb of Salina.

Authorities say the double decker bus carrying at least 20 people hit the bottom of a railroad bridge around 2:30 Saturday morning.

Investigators say the bus was too tall to make it under the low-clearance bridge on the Onondaga Lake Parkway.

The bus left Philadelphia at 10:00 Friday night and was headed for Toronto with stops in Syracuse and Buffalo.

Besides the four people killed, numerous others were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to minor.

Sad. You’d think they’d have checked the route in advance.

Read an article on this accident earlier today ... the bus was off route ... the driver apparently took a wrong turn at some point.

Wasn’t that bus in an “Airplane!” style parody movie? I remember seeing something like that years ago and it was hilarious.

Having driven a long haul big truck for 5 years I can tell you that the driver of that bus could well be charged with manslaughter.

Yep, you’ve gotta be aware of your height and all bridges are posted with clearance requirements. If you are taller then the posted clearance, gotta find a way to turn back somehow. It beats pealing off the top of your bus and killing your passengers. I can only imagine the horrific injuries of those poor people. What a terrible tragedy.

No, no! India is for garish train wrecks. For bus wrecks, it's Andean South America.

The bridge was clearly marked at 10' 9''. The bus driver was off route, no question.

Here’s a Syracuse news link.

I’m familiar with that bridge as well. It is very well marked and I can’t understand how he could have hit it.

I’ve seen the Megabus lots of times and my daughter has used it herself. It does stop at the Regional Transportation Center and likely that’s where he was going as they thought.

Prayers up for all involved. That bus is a mess.
