JAMESBURG, N.J. (AP) -- Officials suspended a fifth-grader in New Jersey who found a lighter on his way to school.

Jamesburg school superintendent Gail Verona told The Home News Tribune of East Brunswick the lighter had the potential to compromise student safety.

But the 11-year-old boy's father questioned why school officials consider the lighter a weapon.

Patrick Halpin called police Wednesday to say there were weapons on school property because teachers at the Grace Breckwedel Middle School had lighters in the building.

________________________________________________

Really? I wouldn’t be too sure about that. If school policy prohibits lighters for EVERYONE (kids and teachers) then this is a weak claim.

In any event. The child and his father need further indoctrination into the wonderfulness of a zero tolerance school policy.

This story neglects to mention the more serious and widespread threat to our schools. Sticks! On nearly every schoolyard in America, one can find these tools of Satan lurking, which can be rubbed together by children to spark violent conflagrations!

What’s even more devious, is that sticks can be easily sharpened on the asphalt of the outdoor basketball courts to fashion deadly weapons. Even without sharpening, a heavy, blunt stick, can easily crush the delicate skulls of our innocents. Clearly sticks are a most heinous violation of our precious zero-tolerance policies and must be expunged from our schools forthwith!

Guess what, TSA doesn’t consider lighters as weapons now. Why would NJ schools? Oh yeah, whatever happened to common sense? Have we arrived at zero tolerance for common sense now?

"...Jamesburg Police Chief Martin Horvath says he believes the school took appropriate action..."

*************************

That part from the article is especially unfortunate.
Police Chief Horvath is yet another statist automaton.

The superintendent says a weapon is anything that "has the potential to cause harm."

As a little boy in elementary school I carried a Boy Scout (Cub Scout?) knife and a Zippo lighter as part of my EDC.

I see you’ve found one of the terrorist training manuals that are being used to corrupt our youth! How did we ever let this happen in America?

So what can we do? Amputate the hands and feet of all schoolkids? They could still headbutt each other, guess we better lop those off too.

Last week my 11th grade son in government school asked to borrow my grill lighter. His Chemistry teacher asked the students in the AP class to each bring in a lighter for a lab because the school could not afford it due to budget cuts. I asked him if he will get in trouble for bringing a banned item to school; his response was the teacher told them to be sure to hide it so they don’t get into trouble...

Well, if you flick a lighter, and you happen to have one of those old time bombs, the black ones with the fuse, you could light the bomb with the lighter.
