Morons. Even after paying taxes they could have lived a nice quiet normal person lifestyle off the interest alone. Better than most people actually.

No sympathy.

The friends she had when she was rich, she says, are nowhere to be found now that she's poor.

Money, you've got lots of friends
Crowding round your door
When you're gone, and spending ends
They don't come round no more

-Billie Holiday

They had $27.20 to their name, but he decided to drive to the Circle K on Trouble Creek Road in New Port Richey and spend $5 on Lotto.

That alone is the precursor to the events that followed. This doesn't surprise me at all.

This sort of thing is quite common. People who have never learned to manage somehow acquire a significant amount. Because they have never learned to manage money, they run through it all very quickly and end up broke.

There may be a lesson to this about the current administration. None of them created the wealth that they have. It was all given to them, mostly by the government or wealthy “friends” who wanted favors from the government.

We are getting the expected results.

Was it Adam Smith that called lotteries a “tax on stupidity”?

SHHHHH! Lotteries are the government's way of helping to ensure that poor people DO pay their fair share of tax.

“The friends she had when she was rich, she says, are nowhere to be found now that she’s poor.

Learned that truth the hard way, didn’t she? “

Billie Holliday wrote and sang a pretty good song about that situation many years ago.

“He still farms....”

Reminds me of the joke where the reporter asks the farmer what he’ll do with his $10 million winnings.

“Oh, I reckon’ I can keep farming for another 8 years now!”

“It was too many sixes for me,” she said. “My husband said it was evil money.”

These people are absolute morons.

Someone once said that if you take all the money in the world, divide it evenly among the people, those that were rich before will be rich again and those that were poor will be poor again.

It’s a conundrum.

Smart people with any sense won’t play the lottery. But if they did, they would know how to live if they ever won big.

Stupid people with no sense are the ones to play the lottery. And if/when they do win....

They piss it away like drunken democrats.

That would be J. Paul Getty. And he said it would happen in a very short period of time. It's a very true statement.

This sort of thing is quite common. People who have never learned to manage somehow acquire a significant amount. Because they have never learned to manage money, they run through it all very quickly and end up broke.

Friend of mine wound up with the house in a divorce settlement. She lived in a shabby neighborhood of Honolulu, and her pathetic shack of a house netted her $300K smackeroos after it sold.

She'd never had much of anything to speak of, and the windfall from the sale of the house made her feel like she was set for life.

Needless to say, she spent like a drunken sailor. Within two short years, she was back to being totally broke, and because she was 62 and without any marketable skills, she wound up in complete poverty.

When she first got the money, I did my darnedest to convince her to buy a home for herself in cash. Here in North Texas, she could have bought a wonderful place for under $200K, and could have invested the rest in something that would have yielded a modest return. She waved me off so many times, that I finally quit trying to counsel her.
