The Battle of Tours (October 10, 732), often called Battle of Poitiers and also called in Arabic بلاط الشهداء (Balaat Alshuhada'a) The Court of Martyrs was fought near the city of Tours, France, by Frankish forces under Austrasian Mayor of the Palace Charles Martel and a massive invading Muslim army led by Emir `Abdul Raħmān al Ghāfiqī, Governor-general of Al-Andalus. The Franks defeated the Islamic army and Emir Abd er Rahman was killed. Charles earned the nickname Martel ("The Hammer") for the merciless way he hammered his opponents during this victory, and went on to repulse later Muslim invasions, driving Muslim forces back to the port of Narbonne. Edward Gibbon said of the Muslim invasions and Charles Martel "in the public danger, he was summoned by the voice of his country."

Charles the Hammer. We owe a lot to this guy. I have liked him ever since i read about him as a teenager. One of the decisive battles fought at that time. One wonders look back over the centuries, if the victory is permanent.

One of the most important battles in the history of mankind. The next time you hear a Muslim apologist whine about the Crusades, ask what a Muslim army was doing in the middle of France. Charity work? Selling cookies?

Martel ended the Moslem conversions of Frenchmen to Islam.

As far as the invasion was concerned, it took another 760 years to get the Moslems out of Spain, and even then, the Moslems had already moved into Greece itself and were chopping up the Balkans by the early 1400s.

Yes. I have Charlemagne / Martel in several branches of my family tree. I lucked out in having a few ancestral lines that could be traced very far back. It’s interesting having some notable ancestors, it’s too bad none of their greatness or wealth rubbed off on me haha.

Thanks Mmogamer. Sounds like this would make a great national holiday throughout Europe.

Muslems are like dog crap - you never quite get rid of them.
Charles the Hammer was a great man.

We need more like him - MANY more.

Most people in the West have no clue as to the role of the Church in the defeat of the Muslim in Europe. One vital role is to unite Christendom in order to handle these folks who are invading once again. Remember the two battles of Vienna...

Muslims do not want to “co-exist”. They want to erase all religions but their own. The Church physically fought Muslims in Europe at one time (rightfully or wrongfully) because they could understand and acted upon the fact that Christianity is the ONE true religion. Sadly, I’m not sure many Christians believe that anymore.
