Police said that the exact cause of death had yet to be confirmed but it is suspected that the child was killed during an attack by the grandmother's Staffordshire Bull terrier and Jack Russell.

Neighbours reported hearing screams of panic as the baby's grandmother ran into the street crying for help. Friends rushed into the house to help and were forced to drag the dogs off the child who was bleeding severely from the attack.

The tragedy occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday morning in the town of Ystrad Mynach, 12 miles north of Cardiff. The child was taken Prince Charles hospital in Merthyr Tydfil where he was later pronounced dead.

The grandmother was also taken to hospital where she was treated for shock but was later released. Police confirmed that they intend to question the grandmother.

I’m willing to bet several things:

1) Grandma was not the alpha of the pack.

2) Grandma left the room and left the dogs alone with the baby.

3) Baby was not in his crib or otherwise out of the reach of the dogs.

4) Despite the neighbor’s anthropomorphism, the dogs were not “jealous” of the baby. Apparently those dogs did not recognize the human as being part of the pack.

Indeed. It is unfortunate that such a tragedy was preventable. I’m sure the grandmother is still plagued by it—being asleep and not waking up until it was too late.

If this thread educates one parent or one grandparent (lurking or otherwise) as to the potential dangers of leaving a baby unsupervised with a dog, it is worth it.

Staffordshire bull terriers are not pit bulls. They are smaller, though related (in so much as Boston terriers, Boxers, and bulldogs are related) dogs that are NOT banned in the UK, and not considered pit bulls there either. American Staffordshire Terriers are considered pit bulls, but they outweigh Staffy Bulls by quite a bit, and can be dual registered as American Pit Bull Terriers in the UKC.

“I’m willing to bet several things:

Unfortunately, many women fall into this category. They lazily ignore obvious problems explaining to others how they “spoil” their pets.

Laziness also explains leaving the baby out of a crib unsupervised and within reach of a pack of dogs which as you rightly point out don’t consider the kid part of the family.
