If I am not mistaken, the 17 minutes that was removed was from “through time and space” the psychedelic drug induced travel scene after the pod enters into the monolith portal at Jupiter (Saturn in the book).

it really is unneeded unless your toking on a number or taking the brown acid man.

...the movie was meant to be viewed ONLY after the book is read.

Here's a Wikipedia synopsis of the book: 2001

Wouldn’t it be funny if the 17 minutes was of Nixon explaining his rationale for the Watergate break-in?

The only movie where they added footage and it made the movie better was “Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Director's Edition)

When I was a kid, I was blown away by the film. I really didn’t care about the logical plot.

2001 A Space Odyssey... where do I begin?

I didn’t understand it then but was too
insecure to admit it. Now as an adult,
I realize (like the Emperor with no clothes),
2001 was the movie with no plot, no message
and no answer ... because there was never
a question.

I’m sick of elitists playing us like
bumpkins.

Definitely one of the greatest sci fi flicks of all time.

People like their laser flashes and explosions but the reality is the space is a quiet dark place.

yeah the movie was obtuse...unless you read the book you really have no idea.

after reading the book it all fits...

AC Clarke was not an elitist...but Kubrick might have been one...I dunno.

Agree Clarke is one of the good guys;
down to earth (no pun intended).

Kubrick is a snob who played with
cinematic toys and then to avoid
being challenged called it “surreal”.

Give me a break.

You beat me to it. Visually it was a great movie, but I never understood what the point was, or even if there was a point.

Read the book.
