Young wife, mother of 2 killed by a simple pothole

HEFLIN, Ala. (AP) — His wife riding beside him with their two children in safety seats in the back, John Fisher drove home toward South Carolina along a stretch of Interstate 20 covered with ruts, bumps and crumbling concrete.

Just ahead of the family, Crystal Marie Dick was heading to the other side of the Georgia line to give a friend a ride.

The pothole in front of her 1995 Toyota Camry had been fixed at least once already, and now the repair was breaking down, too. A pocket of jagged, brittle bits of concrete covered nearly half of the right lane, the slow lane.

Her Camry hit the hole, kicking a chunk into the air as the Fishers' green Ford pickup hurtled forward at 70 mph.

The glass directly in front of Fisher's wife exploded.

I thought obama's shovel-ready projects fixed all the potholes.

Obamas shovel ready jobs will be to bury the dead of his folly.

Republican Governor, Bob McDonald, found $8 Billion hidden in the VDOT funds after he took office. The previous Dem Gov. (Kaine?) whined about “no money” all the time and allowed the Virginia highways to fall to rack and ruin while money sat in the bank. After a Republican (McDonald) was elected, he repaved VA highways border to border. McDonald is operating with a surplus — probably the only state in the Union to do so. At least, that’s how my (very non-political) daughter tells the story. Perhaps someone from VA can enlighten us.

May this young lady rest in peace and the Great Comfortor hhold her grieving husband and children in His arms.

When it is your time to go, the Lord takes you. I had a female worker who was a single mom. Finally got her degree and she was on the road up. Her father was in a nursing home and she got a call that he needed toothpaste, and other personal items. So she ran an errand with her four year old son in the back seat. Problem was that day there was a severe thunder storm. Unlucky for her, her drive to the nursing home was stopped by a large oak branch that happen to fall during the storm and landed on her moving car killing her instantly. Her son and her body was found two hours later by a nurse driving along the road and stopped by a car with a tree branch on it and a four year old kid strapped in the back seat screaming for his mother in a thunder storm.
People who attended the funeral for her noted that her father was devastated and felt guilty for requesting the few articles that instant and not a day or two earlier or later. My conclusion is we are not here to determine nor question fate. God is sovereign, and he gives and he takes. It is not for us to question. Otherwise one can go crazy trying.

Any highway or roadway built or repaveded in whole or in part with federal (yours and mine) money must conform to federal bidding standards. Those standards expressly disallow considering the cost of maintenance when considering a bid for building or repaving. That said, the winning (lowest) bid will almost always be for building or repaving without any protective coating which would significantly extend the life of the building or repaving.

It doesn't have to be mentioned that for the unions employed to build or repave these roadways, protective coatings diminish revenue to the union members and, by extension, union management.

In 1988, I drove from Baltimore to Ft. Worth. The interstate in Arkansas was absolutely the worst interstate road I’d ever encountered. The potholes were wide and deep and there seemed to be no end to them. Had to have my car aligned twice right after arriving in Ft. Worth and new shocks and struts installed. Back then, Billy Clinton had been governor of Arkansas. I’ve never again been on such bad roads and I live in Alabama now. I’m sure other states have similar problems. Although I’m certainly not politically naive, I have to admit that I thought Obama’s shovel ready projects might make a dent on some of these terrible roads and bridges. I knew he was a crooked socialist or left of this, but I thought he would at least make some semblance of effort. Unfortunately, there will be more tragedies similar to Mrs. Fisher. May she rest in peace and may God bring comfort and strength to her husband, children and families.

The Arkansas interstates improved under Huckabee.

When it is your time to go, the Lord takes you.

Don't you think you could go jump in front of a car and hurry that up a bit?

I-20 from Pell City, AL to Anniston has been in horrible shape for years. Now the have killed somebody by diverting collected federal gas tax money to socialist programs. Our government has become evil.

I agree 100%.

When it’s our time, we can’t pick and choose how and where it will happen.

I’ve seen my share of people suffering through why. It isn’t why, it just is. Once your heart accepts it, you can finally move on.

That may sound cold but living with a broken heart is hell.

God have mercy on this poor family.

This has got to be one of the weirder ways I’ve ever heard of to die.

They have the worst pothole at the local post office. I drive a tiny car, and the only legal way out forces you to get past a pothole so big no matter how I try, given the steep driveway it scrapes.

Someone in a car even lower than mine, and a lot more expensive, is going to either leave their oil pan in that hole or nose down into it and not be able to get out safely without being winched.

Any idea how I’d get in touch with anyone who can do anything about it? I called and talked to a local postal clerk who agreed it was bad and said they’ve been begging to get it patched for months.
