A Millisecond Moment: When The Moon And Space Station Eclipse The Sun

French photographer Thierry Legault knew he had .86 seconds to get the shot. He'd flown to the Sultanate of Oman for the perfect vantage point. January 4th that part of the world saw a partial solar eclipse, but Legault, who's a veteran astrophotographer, didn't want just a spectacular shot of the moon crossing in front of the sun. No, he wanted to capture that millisecond moment when the moon and the International Space Station eclipsed the sun at the same time. He explained the logistics of getting the shot to us:

Actually, I don't think so. Lots of error because I don't have a model of the lens used, but the distances from surface of the Earth, relative size of the space station, relative size of the moon and sun seems to be +/- close enough.
Libs are the ones that typically cheat, and they don't do well in hard sciences.

One very lonely, tiny sunspot. The sun should have them like an outbreak of acne at this point in the standard 11 years cycle.

Yep, it is cool. We did that. From putting the space station in space, to providing a photo-journalist enough information to know where and when to be to get the shot, to building the infrastructure to get him there, and then get his photo out worldwide.
Way cool. Great time to be alive. Lots of cool things to see.
