Do Cholesterol Drugs Do Any Good?
Bloomberg Business Week ^ | 01/17/2008 | John Carey

Yes, Wright saw, the drugs can be life-saving in patients who already have suffered heart attacks, somewhat reducing the chances of a recurrence that could lead to an early death. But Wright had a surprise when he looked at the data for the majority of patients, like Winn, who don't have heart disease. He found no benefit in people over the age of 65, no matter how much their cholesterol declines, and no benefit in women of any age. He did see a small reduction in the number of heart attacks for middle-aged men taking statins in clinical trials. But even for these men, there was no overall reduction in total deaths or illnesses requiring hospitalization—despite big reductions in "bad" cholesterol. "Most people are taking something with no chance of benefit and a risk of harm," says Wright. Based on the evidence, and the fact that Winn didn't actually have angina, Wright changed his mind about treating him with statins—and Winn, too, was persuaded. "Because there's no apparent benefit," he says, "I don't take them anymore."

That is one of the flaws of our Health care system, not much consideration of cost/risk/benefit analysis. Did the doc tell you how much your heart disease risk would be reduced by getting the cholesterol just a little lower? Likely near zero, the only benefit might be psychological, but even that would have to be weighed against the worry over possible side effects.

There seems to be rubbing backs attitude with the pharmies, I don’t like it at all.

There is now a genetic test that helps determine if you have a good response to Lipitor. I had a genetic test done through Pathway Genomics that tests at least 15 known drugs and what your response to those drugs are based on your genetic profile. They also determine if you are in the 1% group that has an adverse response (muscle wasting) to statins. I was found to have a genetic variant that makes me a good responder to statins...but my cholesterol is good right now. I also found out that I’m a fast metabolizer of caffeine which didn’t surprise me because I can drink coffee right up until bedtime. Genomics and individualized drugs is the future....

Omega 3 side effects? The only one I can think of is fish burps.

Never take Omega3 pills and a diet coke at the same time.

Last cholesterol check was 130.
Good cholesterol was 47.

It based off of water and food you eat. Google “Alkaline Foods”. Then the next time you are at the grocery store pick it up.

Flaxseed oil is a good alternative for anyone that experiences that. I keep both around, bounce back and forth. I've also noticed that some brands are more prone to that than others.

Avoid running if you can. For one thing it’s bad on your knees. Here is a better solution for you.

Do a good walk for at least 1 hour. Not a power walk but just a good walk. It will burn more calories after 12 hours vs. a jogger. This is because it triggers a hormone. I can’t recall the name of it. Nevertheless, after 12 hours the person who walked will end up burn more calories than a person who jogged for 30 minutes. When you walk it triggers a hormone (can’t think of the name) that burns calories (at a slower rate) for the next 12 hours.

Walk, Bike, Swim all great exercises. When I walk I usually listen to audio books or talk radio podcast on my iPod. It makes the time go by a little faster and more enjoyable.

Flaxseed Oil should help with your blood pressure. Here are some of the benefits. This stuff is great. Take it with skim milk if you can. It will stay in your body 8 hours vs. 3 hours without skim milk,

Fish Oil too should help you with your blood presure. Here are the benefits

Oh and increase your intake of water. Generally you want to be around 1/2 your body weight in ounces. So think of a 12 ozs can of Coke to get an idea.

Oh and after every 32 ozs of water you want 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon of “Sea Salt”. Preferably Kosher Sea Salt since it has a lot the minerals you need daily. It will make it easier on your kidneys and store water for you so when your body needs it.

Oh and don’t use the salt you see at resturants or the iodized salt in the grocery store. You know the one with the woman with the umbrella on it. It’s not good for you. All the good minerals have been taken out of it.

Finally, slowly work your body up to all this stuff. Your body will need to adapt to it. Think the first time I took Fish Oil and was kind of rushing it. I’m almost threw up!

At any rate, I hope this helps you out.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! Anybody know why “healthy cholesterol levels” have been set lower and lower over the past few years?

Someone may say, "So the pharmaceutical companies can make a lot of money." But it's more because, although a relatively small number of people are hypercholesterolemic (and congenitally so), people who set policy don't want people to think, "Ah, that's only a small number of people who are really seriously affected, so it probably really doesn't have anything to do with me." Same with salt consumption. Also, it overlooks the fact that in the upper decades of life, a greater cholesterol level is associated with continued health and a lower cholesterol level is often followed by problems. If you don't have sufficient cholesterol, your tissue integrity (and the function those tissues depend on) is shot.

I have no problem with a company making money. When the wealthy make money, that trickles down to me in some form. I do have a problem with a company creating a product for profit, but not being completely sincere about the product. I don't care how much money that company donates to good causes, they have earned that money by being disingenuous. I feel that way about many drugs and their pushers. I had an experience after I had my son. I was diagnose with postpartum depression. I tried to tell the doctor that I didn't think that was the problem. She told me that it was and gave me a script. Turned out I had systemic candida. Oooops.

Something I’m trying to investigate: I’ve heard that skim, 1%, and some 2% milks have been fortified with powdered skim milk. If that is true, these milks are full of oxidants because milk is oxidized to get it to its powdered state.

I know for an absolute FACT that Saw Palmetto concentrated extract - for relatively cheap will reduce an enlarged prostate glad - IT WORKS every time.

I suffer from hypercholesterolemia. My body produces more than enough cholesterol to cause cardiovascular disease all by itelf, even if I were on a diet of 100% lettuce. I’ve been taking statins for over 20 years. The latest in depth anaylsis of my cardiovascular system shows NO blockages in any arteries. I’m 48 years old and I’ve had a brother and three uncles drop dead from sudden heart attacks in their 40’s.

Don’t tell me statin drugs don’t work. I’m living proof that they do. And my wife and two children are darned glad they do.

Think about getting raw milk from grass fed pastured cows. Of course from someone local that you can verify they regularly test for tuberculosis, johnes and brucellosis. Check out www.eatwild.com
