Is something up with Free Republic?

Am I the only one having problems connecting to Free Republic today?

Thank you for this site information. I actually never heard of it before. I’ll be sure to put this in my favorites!

All of a sudden FR seems to be back to normal speed.

Hope it lasts.

In the mean time, John is pulling his hair out trying to find the problem. And I’m sure he eventually will. Always has. Always will.

He did! He did!

Speed-of-light thanks to both of you!

This is the best place.

The formerly UK and still pretty liberal

http://www.abovetopsecret.com

site is also good on alternative news.

Sometimes FR has some things they don’t have and vice versa.

This happens every time we get big news events lately, the system gets over loaded and then we get LOTS of USELESS VANITY POST and photos SLOWING DOWN THE SYSTEM even more.

What would the cost be for a total replacement or whatever equal to that, Jim?

I suspect that FREEPERS might be willing to rise to the occasion if the payoff seemed fitting accordingly.

And, it could lengthen the time it takes for John to go white headed.

Aren’t there some qualified AND TRUSTWORTHY FEEPERS who could help lessen his load in searching for such glitches?

We have some very skilled and smart and devoted, loyal members.

Maybe you’re right.

Today has certainly reminded me of how much I rely on FR for news and sanity! :-)

John has my sympathies. As a geek friend often remarks to new computer users: start hating it now. Unless someone has had the headache of keeping a complex computer system running they can’t have any idea what it takes, nor how difficult it can be to diagnose what the problem actually is, let alone determine how to fix it.

Thanks Jim for sticking with it even in the face of FReepers complaining. As you said, John’ll find it.

I suspect you're exactly right. I still say this is the best forum software out there -- by far -- in terms of the basic user interface. Totally streamlined and usable with no wasted motion or silly features. But this slowness issue is getting old. I would definitely kick in some bucks if I knew it would go towards a solution.

Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle.

And a third is a total replacement. Don’t have the financial wherewithal.

To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya. If FR dies, that’s that.

Thank you Jim and John for the clean design and tight code that underpins FR. Today, just as it was on 9/11 (long before I joined), this remains my primary source for breaking news and factual, no-nonsense information.

The lack of banner ads, Flash, JavaScript and graphics are what I've always found appealing. Today, when things did get a tad sluggish, all I did on my end was fire up the venerable Lynx character-based text browser. Voila! FR was again fast and responsive. John's backend scripts and the HTML are all solid and standards compliant.

Please keep the design straightforward and dismiss the ideas of those who want useless eye candy and a radical departure from the time-tested, proven look and feel.

I feel the same way and I know a LOT of other FREEPERS feel similarly.

However, dialogue about such things has always been . . . something . . . . challenging to get very far with.

CERTAINLY IT’S THE BEST ON THE NET. AND PTL AND THE ROBINSONS FOR THAT.

HOWEVER . . . .

INDEED. I MUCH AGREE.

I think the vast majority of FREEPERS agree.

Since more and more Seniors are texting and tweeting, there appears to be a need for an STC (Senior Texting Code). I know none of us qualifies as a “Senior” so just pass this along to your “older” friends.

ATD: At The Doctor’s
BTW: Bring The Wheelchair
BYOT: Bring Your Own Teeth
CBM: Covered By Medicare
CUATSC: See You At The Senior Center
DWI: Driving While Incontinent
FWB: Friend With Beta Blockers
FWIW: Forgot Where I Was

GGPBL: Gotta Go, Pacemaker Battery Low!
GHA: Got Heartburn Again
HGBM: Had Good Bowel Movement
IMHO: Is My Hearing-Aid On?
LMDO: Laughing My Dentures Out
LOL: Living On Lipitor
LWO: Lawrence Welk’s On
OMMR: On My Massage Recliner
OMSG: Oh My! Sorry, Gas.
ROFL... CGU: Rolling On The Floor Laughing... And Can’t Get Up
TTYL: Talk To You Louder
WAITT: Who Am I Talking To?
WTFA: Wet The Furniture Again
WTP: Where’s The Prunes?
WWNO: Walker Wheels Need Oil
GGLKI: Gotta Go, Laxative Kicking In
