Sneaky Telemarketers
My Rant | January 15, 2011 | me

Posted on 01/15/2011 8:18:03 AM PST by tuffydoodle

Have telemarketers found a way around the do not call list? I have been getting calls from telemarketers where they always ask for the wrong name. When I reply that they have the wrong number, they say, "well, maybe you can help me." The first time it happened, I listened for a minute, wondering why this person on my phone would be asking a stranger for help. When I realized what they were up to, I simply hung up. I've had several calls since, with the caller using the same tactic. Anybody else have any experience with this scam?

The calls I have been getting lately are a bit different. They call on Monday and ask about my business hours. I give them the hours and Tuesday I get a call saying my phone skills are great and for a few hundred bucks I can buy in to some marketing company. (So I can start calling people and annoying them too)

You could also answer and act very interested, but say “....wait just a minute while I get a pen and paper”. Then lay the phone down and walk away. Come back a few minutes later and see if they’re still there..hehehe

Same happened to me. Once I realized it was a telemarketer, I toyed with her a little bit, then hung up.

Love it! Maybe just thinking they’ll be horned might give them cause to think about it. I know, wishful thinking.

I have one of these, purchased 3 years ago and it works.

http://www.privacycorps.com/products/?id=20

I have no affiliation with his company.

One word of advice, you must, connect it to your telephone “Demarc” which is the first tel “jack” that appears in your home. If you are not sure where the Demarc is located, call someone who wires houses or tel-co.

The only thing that gets by is “incoming call” on your caller ID

You also need an AC outlet near by.

any questions, PM me

I usually rely on the caller ID and don’t answer. When it gets really annoying, I will pick up and pretend that I can’t hear them. Saying Hello over their speil usually causes them to hang up.

Those little air horns are an excellent tool to slow an intruder down while you get to a weapon. Think in layers of response ... air horn, 25 foot wasp spray, .45 auto loader, shotgun with 2 and 4 duplex, 5.56 nato rounds concentrated on target. I foyu get to the last layer, you’re under siege and could use a few claymores you forgot to arm.

I have a system that works quite well in keeping the phones silent. I answer every call and ones that have a human on the other end, I tell them the magic words "Remove my number from your call list and do not call it again" - seems to work better than some "list". It works every time with legit businesses - as for "other" sorts of businesses and scammers that use recordings, I usually bang the pound and/or 9 keys and they hang right up. Those sort of calls are very sporadic and tend to vanish after a while. I think the stinky economy has put a dent into those sort of operations since there doesn't seem to be as many as there once were (at least to me). For the really obnoxious scammer types, like those who may call multiple times in a single day, I screencap the Caller ID info into a JPEG file and forward it in to the state AG's office as part of an official complaint. Has worked so far in putting the kabosh on those sort of clowns.

The real answer is caller ID AND an answering machine (NOT central voicemail) — you can listen to the caller leaving a message on your answering machine, while they are leaving the message, i.e. monitor it.

Let friends know that if they call from unfamiliar numbers or block their number to start leaving a message, then if you recognize them, you pick up.

Avoids running to the phone, just to find it’s a telemarketer and the annoyance of having to deal with them, and you don’t miss any calls you do want to answer.

If you recognize the number you pick up, if not, wait another minute to see if you recognize the person leaving the message, otherwise no need to pick up.

It works like a charm.

“I have no way of knowing if it’s someone at my gate or a phone call”

If you had caller ID, you would know whether someone is calling from the phone at your gate.

We only have caller ID on line one, not the gate line. The telemarketers are using my gate line. But I was actually only asking if anyone else was getting these types of solicitor calls where they act like they have the wrong number.

My phone has Call Blocker. I add the offending phone numbers to my Call Blocker List and whenever they call they hear the phone ring once, then a busy signal and then the phone automatically hangs up. On my end it rings once and on the screen it says “Caller Blocked.”

You can find out without paying. Just type in Area Code-—in your search box. I always find one that says “Did you receive a phone call from -—?” There is a place to put the number - you don’t always find what it is, but there is usually some discussion, other people who’ve received th same call, and you’ll almost always get your answer.

By the way, hanging up does no good. Most marketing software gives the caller three choices - Continue, Schedule callback, or Refused. Hanging up is not viewed as refused - until you say the word no to them, they will continue to call.
