What do we do if OUR Government shuts down the internet?

Posted on 01/28/2011 9:33:26 PM PST by jongaltsr

Seeing what has happened in Egypt and their ability to quickly shut down the internet got me to thinking about the possibility that at some time in the future OUR Government may try the same with us.

Therefor I thought that to prepare for such an event should be planned by us (the citizens who would most likely to be effected as well as the people most likely to need alternatives to internet connections to stay in communications and keep upraised of events not being reported accurately (and intentionally).

We would have to depend upon our telephones but that can readily shut down by a government that is willing to cut off internet access.

TV and certain radio stations would be all that we could rely upon in such an event. I would imagine that some (Right Wing)-(other than the acceptable liberal radio stations) would be shut down (or can they?)

Can you (My fellow FR conspirators) think of methodologies of maintaining connections to information which can not easily be cut off by our government agencies?

In some countries, people have taken over Radio and Television stations but that requires physically attacking and provoking Police & Military action at some point.

Put on your thinking caps and lets see if there are any of you out there that can devise a plan of action for such an event.

My one thought (so far) is that the government might not shut down the telephone system immediately because that would directly affect so many people that that act in itself would be more devastating to citizens than would the loss of the internet. Therefor a "Tweet" link could be our own second line of information. I'm not sure if the "Tweet" system involves the internet in any way. Is it independent of computer technology and strictly Phone System dependant?

Since I don't "tweet", I just don't know the answer to that question.

Can you devise other ideas? and let us share your ideas "Just in Case !"

Oh, and what you favorite method for getting a tire to light?*****

#1 lay tire on side

#2fill inside of tire with gasoline

#3 run a stream of gasoline over the tire and about 10 feet from said tire. Light the gasoline and watch it burn up to the tire and see it explode....:O)

You know if they have a smart phone app for it yet?

Sorry, I just have to look at the irony of modern day gadgets and third world protests mixing.

Kinda like that bomber that got “blown up good” by a spam text.

Amateur radio. My radio shack is all set and ready fire on many hundreds of watts. By today's standards, a 'primitive' form of communication to be sure. But in a pinch, it's not easy to cut off. And under the right conditions, I am able to reach Alaska and overseas.

In all honesty - 97.5% of all Americans would do as they are told;

We have matured beyond that 60's mentality. It appears we have achieved the golden 10%, enough to bring down a government.

If our government shut down the Internet, there would be immediate chaos in the business world.

And as you said: Much of the government world happens online too.

Laz, I work in telecommunications and can back up what you said. If they shut down the internet, EVERYTHING stops. And I mean, EVERYTHING. Just stop and think for a minute how many times you access some form of the internet or data transfer in your daily life. The government, especially the Military, would be severaly hamstrung.

Do that and you will understand that if zero and his idiots shut down the internet, all hell will break loose.

Hah! Back then, there weren’t any cellphones to speak of. Husband had one of the first ones that came out and it took up a whole passenger seat in the car it was so big. (It was either that or use a pay phone on business trips.) It was sorta refreshing not to see - and hear - EVERYBODY on a darned cellphone yakking and yukking it up everywhere you went. That changed; but I still resist using those little Oreo cookie sized cellphones. - The early patriots met at the taverns in Williamsburg and discussed the situation. Meeting face to face may become in fashion once again.

“In all honesty - 97.5% of all Americans would do as they are told; march the local reporting center, get their ID cards and turn in their weapons, passports and bank books.”

I think your a little high at 97.5%, but your spot on about everything else.

Ham radio is the first line of defense in case of national disasters. In earthquakes, floods cell towers go down. Might think about joining your local ham radio operator network. You no longer have to do morse code. Radio’s are cheap though. Just got hubby a new one for the car for Christmas $250.

Two points are important.

Point #1: Yesterday, the Egyptian military confronted the Egyptian police in some areas. It seems that the military was on the side of the protesters; the police on the side of the government.

If we got to that point in the USofA, we would have to see:
Per TV reports, in Egypt, it seemed that the citizenry did not have weapons, but the government did. Here in the USofA, many millions of citizens DO have weapons.

Point #2: The Internet was constructed to be a decentralized communications sytem that could withstand a nuclear attack.

Most business, industry, and communications depend on the Internet. If the government tried to shut it down, not only would they have the ire of the citizenry, but they would have the ire of the business community.

Perhaps enough businesses are on Internet-2, but I am not sure how viable it is yet. If I-2 is viable, business might be able to continue.

The worry for the government, of course, is for the citizenry to be able to communicate. People will find a way. Smoke signals, BBS systems via telephone, ham radio, etc.

It seems that amateur radio would be the most reliable and expedient way to exchange information in this scenario. One weakness for a lot of new operators is they no longer require Morse Code proficiency to get your license - such a shame, it is a useful skill. Us old-time operators will be dit-dotting away.

“Living among the Leftist crazies.”

I spent 14 years living in a mine union town in NM. It was an education for a good old boy West Texas farm boy to be exposed to real Commies.

In the early 1980’s I was up close and personal to the agitators from the Sandanistas. They were in NM trying to stir up the locals. Despicable cretin.

I was very politically involved then. Was Republican County Chairman in a county where the registration was 5 Dems to 1 Pubbie.

Yes, I know what Commies are...
