It is interesting. And didn't the Tampa airport recently have to correct their runway markings? I don't know why it would be just Tampa and not every other airport...that part didn't make sense to me.

From what I've seen and read, they say when a pole shift occurs, it actually would happen quite quickly. Sort of like when you're pushing magnets around on a table until one suddenly flips over.

“And didn’t the Tampa airport recently have to correct their runway markings”

Yes, that is correct. Probably some other airports had to do the same thing.

I just so happen to have a compass sitting right next to me and guess what, it’s pointing north and holding steady

Here's what AOL News says about the shift's effect on compass readings:

"Normally, magnetic fields don't require adjustments to be made at airports, FAA spokesman Paul Takemoto told FoxNews.com. 'You want to be absolutely precise in your compass heading,' Takemoto said. 'To make sure the precision is there that we need, you have to make these changes.'"

My guess is a handheld compass isn't sensitive enough to register the shift yet, but if it maintains its current pace of 40 miles/year, it won't be long before all compasses are affected.

Heh, NASA has had to revise their sunspot prediction several times over the last three years, because the sunspots haven't gone back up to the numbers there should be, if they were doing their typical 11 year cycle.

The dearth of sunspots in the past three years could be the beginnings of a new Solar Minimum, like the Maunder or the Dalton minimums of the past. If we do have one, I think it should be named the Hansen-Gore Minimum.

Your compass will still point to North, its the local that changes.

That's interesting, Netizen. I didn't know that. Thanks for posting.

I may have mispoke. According to the video I linked in #47, the physicist says compasses wouldn’t work.

He also says that earth has reversed poles about 30 times in its history.

I guess its a slooooowwwww process.

I should add that the physicist says it doesn’t mean the end on the world and he makes fun of the movie Core.

They say when a pole shift occurs, it actually would happen quite quickly.

What you're referring to is a polar reversal, not a polar shift. Per Wikipedia:

"A geomagnetic reversal is a change in the orientation of Earth's magnetic field such that the positions of magnetic north and magnetic south become interchanged. These events often involve an extended decline in field strength followed by a rapid recovery after the new orientation has been established. These events occur on a scale of tens of thousands of years or longer, with the latest one (the Brunhes–Matuyama reversal) occurring 780,000 years ago."

(The bolded text refers to the polar shift prior to a polar reversal.)

This link will take you to a file that show the movement of the magnetic lines from 1590 to 1990.

Wow, that’s really something! I had no idea the magnetic field has been in a constant state of flux.
