Pittsburgh steelworkers warned not to skip work for Super Bowl

Some Pittsburgh-area steelworkers are being warned that taking off to watch the Steelers in the Super Bowl could cause "severe disciplinary action."

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that U.S. Steel's Mon Valley Works has issued a notice to employees (below right) which states that missing work on Sunday or Monday without just cause will result in a Super Bowl-sized penalty.

By far, the vast majority of union contracts make the reasons for absence a moot point.

The employer can assign priority work periods where penalties are increased, but in most cases, cannot delve into determining what constitutes “just cause.”

Steelworkers cannot skip work for a Superbowl Party.

But the P-resident can.

In other words, the steel industry takes its work more seriously than the current President of the US takes his.

In the main, I’m with the employer.
BUT...set up plenty of video monitors and/or BLASTING radio reports of
the Super Bowl game for general morale.

I’ve never worked in a steel plant, but it looks like a VERY challenging
environment. But a positive outcome from the morally-questioned
quarterback for the Steelers might just be the thing for work-place morale.

Just my naive/inexpert opinion (IMHO)
(I recall my father’s work in an oil refinery about 50 years ago
and how nasty the work could be.)

That's pretty much how I see it.

And as the article states, there are always people who aren't football fans. The die-hard fans can probably make shift-trade deals so that their position is covered and they can enjoy the game.

The military is allowing late reporting on Monday for non-essentials because the game is at around 3:00 a.m. here.

Uh oh. Someone used the term “Super Bowl” without getting permission from the NFL. I smell a lawsuit! /s

If the Steelers weren’t securing a slot in the Super Bowl every other month, it probably wouldn’t be an issue.

I have heard nothing about cheese workers in Green Bay getting warned not to miss work.

When was the last time GB went to the SB? Late 80s or early 90s?

See, they don’t have that same issue!

Remember, steel foundries have to function WITHOUT INTERUPTION! (Unless as part of a planned shutdown) The process involves metallic steel flowing continuously. If the flow is interrupted, the steel solidifies, and the entire factory becomes a useless piece of junk. Planned shutdowns and restarts take weeks, so they do not occur for one day athletic events. Management must make absolutely certain that a sufficient workforce is on the job.

Kind of like the Steelers themselves.

Oh no, I didn't.

BTW, I want Green Bay to win (and will be rooting for them), but I think the Steelers will win by 2 or 3 TDs.

It won't be close.

Our company sent an email that if we are absent this weekend, we need to have a doctor's excuse or paperwork from the Emergency Department.

Our company is a hospital and, understandably, people can't be calling off willy-nilly and having co-workers take on extra patients.

I'm OK - I work 7-3 today and will be home in time to watch the Super Bowl.

GO Stillers!

Wait...aren't they supposed to use the term, "the big game"?

I guess the unions can use any term they want...

Yes, I've worked in oil and gas and in engineering and construction. I was a corporate type, but both were associated with plants that had to operate 24/7.

that's why I said that I agree with the company's policy.

They should put a large screen available to watch on breaks or perhaps have a nice dinner for them. It would do a lot for morale and even will make these folks work harder knowing that the company cares for them.

Dumbest statement ever. President is 24-7. He gets a salary where these guts get there 50 bucks an hour.....not comparison and ridiculous to try.

Maybe Obama should get a hourly wage. I see him making about 12 buck swinging a mop in a adult bookstore .

Simple solution. Smash your hand with a hammer, go to the emergency room early in the morning. Wait 8 hours to be seen, get a Dr’s statement, get your beer and pizza and enjoy the game.

Steelworkers have lots of work, important to the country’s operation, to do, but the President has no crises or anything important (like unemployment) that need attention, so he can take the weekend off.

Yup, apples and oranges. I get it now.
