Will Apophis Hit Earth in 2036? NASA Rejects Russian Report

In 2004, NASA scientists announced that there was a chance that Apophis, an asteroid larger than two football fields, could smash into Earth in 2029. A few additional observations and some number-crunching later, astronomers noted that the chance of the planet-killer hitting Earth in 2029 was nearly zilch.

Now, reports out of Russia say that scientists there estimate Apophis will collide with Earth on April 13, 2036. These reports conflict on the probability of such a doomsday event, but the question remains: How scared should we be?

I’m going to short the market the day before it hits and the day after I’ll be richer than Soros.

Its going to be so cool. Then I’ll write a book about my investment strategy. I’ll call it the Black Meteor Effect. I’ll make even more millions.

I’ll be 98, waahhh, I was planning to go over 100. Anyway I’ll start worrying at 95. Two football fields could produce a really nasty bump for a couple of states or small countries, and perhaps several years of nuclear winter, but not totally fatal by any means. There is a two mile diameter crater found when SH drained the Iraq marshes that messed up but did not destroy the middle east about 4,000 years ago.

Well, I can see why the Russians are worried. I think I would plan to be at a higher elevation that day.

And be outside, too. So that you can claim to have heard, and maybe even seen it, unaided by technology(hopefully just a glow on the horizon followed by world-class thunder after a surprisingly long delay)!

New images from NASA confirm that Apophis is not unfriendly after all. (Though he is a bit of a blowhard.)
