SANFORD, Fla. -- Surveillance video from a Sanford Walmart helped lead detectives to a suspect in the theft of more than $1,000 of computer hardware.
The video shows a woman hanging out in the electronics section, and then placing external hard drives in a bag under her shirt, police said.
Police said the woman then went into the bathroom, dumped the security chip in the packaging and left the store.
Investigators went to Craigslist and found the same hard drives for sale.
Undercover officers then set up a meeting with the woman and offered to purchase the hardware.
Police said the serial numbers matched with the stolen items.
Deanna Lombardi was arrested. Police said she told them she would pay Walmart back if she wasn't charged.
Police said Lombardi told them she was having a hard time and was giving money to her mother.
These thieves hardly ever get prosecuted for their crimes.
Is she less Guilty than these folks?

No. She should be charged and made to serve time - not in jail at taxpayer expense but doing community service work. I think pickup up crap along the highways or cleaning public restrooms for a thousand hours or so would maybe teach a valuable lesson.
WOW...We are doomed. I used to work part-time @ Borders. When they caught shoplifters [sometimes organized rings] they were just let go. BUT THEY TREATED THE EMPLOYEES LIKE THIEVES. You were checked and walked out the door at the end of your shift.

You are 100% Correct. Incarceration only if they don’t show for Community Service ... it’s cheaper and then make them serve in “Their own Neighborhood” so that everyone they know can see them.

There is really an organized bunch that shoplift .. they think they are “Gypsies” or some such thing ... the women shoplift while the men sell driveway sealant, aluminum siding or quick roof remedies door to door.
They also flock to disasters ...

I’m not surprised that it happened in a place like Sanford, FLA. Sanford is a city where they shuttle the undesireables that the tourists don’t want to see. I remember going down there once to visit my brother who lives in another nearby Orlando suburb and nearly getting into a fight with a bunch of teenagers who called me “Oreo” because I didn’t talk like them. They did it at a grocery store, for no less. A grocery store full of hard, metallic objects full of food. I let the police handle that one because I was heading back up to Minnesota the next day and didn’t want to stay in Florida and testify.
I’ve been one of the inventory folks hired to catch employee theft.
Sadly the biggest losses for most retail chains come from employees.

That’s weird, I once worked for a grocery Store, Night clean-up where we Mopped and Waxed just after the crew that re-stocked finished up. I was waxing around a Safe and there was $350.00 in a paperclip on top of the safe ... I turned it in to the Manager the next day and no-one thought it was a big deal at all. We worked for the same company and that was company Money. If the Re-stocking Crew had found it they would have done the same.
I’m not buying the Employee Theft thing at all unless things have that radically changed in the last 30 years.

(now I did pay the Butcher to leave a case of beer out back at 3:00AM when I got off, but that wasn’t theft, I was 16 and I paid the Butcher well (still illegal, but in my mind not wrong) he was a Company Man, Family with the Owner too now that I think about it)
It was just my experiences working on the inventory side of things. We were an independent company, and businesses hired us to generally get the books straight.
One business claimed a loss of around 5k a couple years ago. Pretty good considering the economy. The boss got suspicious, because even in good years, they lost a couple thousand. He was expecting it to show much larger losses.
After going through all the records, I found a 60k loss, that the manager had attempted to conceal, through a one-time adjustment of obsolete stock.
It would be difficult for shoplifting to rack up 60k in losses, on a business that in a good year might expect 5k in profit over employee salaries.
There are all kinds of games I’ve seen people try to do. But, with outside intervention, the books always come true. Always.
