TAX TIME - Where are the 1040 Form Instructions? (VANITY)

Posted on 02/08/2011 3:36:10 PM PST by NavyCanDo

What gives with the delay in the printing and distributing the 1040 Instruction Books, which includes the new Tax Tables? I heard they would be delayed - and the "lucky public" would have an extra few days in April, be I have heard nothing of the reason why.

TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: vanity
Sign at the Library still says Forms have not arrived yet. I heard they made some mistakes and had to reprint, but what are those mistakes? Hopefully it is the tax table because they have shifted only by a few bucks. And with Obama taking out less withholding we are owing that money back the way I figure it, if the tax tables did not adjust.

I called the IRS at 1-800-TAX-FORMS. I asked for my 1040 tax booklet with the coded mailing label. They told me that they are not sending them out anymore. I requested my forms and a Publication 17. You have to call and request the forms that you need or go to the IRS website. No more coded labels with name and address.

It is available online at irs.gov.

I guess I am just an idiot for not understanding something here: The extension passed by CONgress in December, 2010 affected the 2011 tax year. We are filing returns for the 2010 tax year which was, otherwise unaffected by the extension passed in December. Why would the IRS have to re-program schedule A tables based on the December extension when they, technically, weren't affected (2010 tax rates, that is)? Am I the only one puzzled by this?

I got a Form 17 at my library (Pasco, FL). Usually do them on IRS pdf's; however, the instructions don't seem as visually clear this year. Maybe a function of turning calendar pages.

“Since Congress restored the opportunity for taxpayers to choose between deducting state income taxes or state sales tax, the IRS had to revise the Schedule A – the form you use to itemize your deductions. It will not be ready for use until February 14. At the same time, some of those who do not itemize their deductions are affected, too. Those who can claim the $250 deduction available to teachers and teachers’ aides who spend money for classroom supplies or the deduction for up to $4,000 of qualified college cost can now make these claims as they were reinstated by the President when he signed the legislation last December 17.

Yes I know, but I wanted to know if they were up to date, if the paper copies were not.
