Alcohol Detectors Could Come Standard With a New Car
NBC LA ^ | 03-11-11 | VIKKI VARGAS and JULIE BRAYTON

A new law under consideration would call for installation of a device that would allow six violations before stalling the car

It's called "The Roads Safe Act" and opponents claim it's designed to put an alcohol detector in every car, just like an airbag or stereo.

Currently ignition interlock systems are only installed by court order.

Mechanics who work with the Smart Start System say you don't have to be over the legal limit to stall out.

"Normally what they should calibrate it at .03. I believe for most people that's the warning level," said Garrett Benedict, a mechanic.

What is the bet that they pass this nonsense in CA and the rest of use will have to have this all over the US. Swell.

If I had a car like this, I would tamper with the mechanism to defeat it, law notwithstanding. And I don’t even drink.

I wonder how much that will add to the price of a new car? Once again, it is “shotgun management”. Instead of punishing the repeat drunk drivers, they want to punish everyone. Sheesh!

What about a scale in the car too? If you are more than 20 pounds over weight, the car won’t start? If what about a voice recognition system so that if the car hears you use the “N” word or make a racist comment, it won’t start?

Don’t give ‘em any ideas.

As opposed to back in the days before injector/computers, when we would say things like that because the car won’t start or was hard to get started.

That comment reminded me of the last time the Gov't got involved like this. Back in the early 70's, the Federales forced seat sensors in all 1972-73 cars to make a buzzer go off if you didn't have your belt on. By the 74-75 models they had the interlock system were you couldn't even start the car without a seat belt. It is the only time I can remember in recent times that the Gov't back down becase so many people ripped them out at the dealerships when they took delivery.

My 1972 Vista Cruiser still has it hooked up and when I hit a bump, my breifcase will set off the loud buzzer just by sitting on the passenger seat.

How much do jails or deaths cost taxpayers per annum? I don’t think this should be a mandatory feature, but it should be a standard feature offered that does not have a stigma to it. Drunk driving is not a right.

I sense an opportunity here for a hack around this. I can cash in on one, even if it does not work well.

hey, what happens as we put more and more ethanol in the gasoline?

What happens the very first time someone gets killed or hurt because of the delay in using the device, or if the device fails? Like, for an extreme example, the tsunami warning is given and your car wants you to pick up the handpiece, punch a few buttons, blow into it, and wait for authorization? Or a brush fire, riot, zombies...

....each drunk driving arrest puts money in the pocket of Houston, Texas police officers who boost salaries up to $172,000 a year through overtime..

The DUI Enforcers won't like it.

Same here. Heck, I'd set up a cottage industry to do just that.

Of course, anyone coming in smelling of alcohol already would instantly be fed to the Gimp.

It’s also incomplete, a lot of DUI’s are for pills, legal and illegal, weed, cough medicine, etc. What about diabetics? Should the govt. verify their blood sugar levels before the car can start? Hypoglycemics can pass out at the wheel if their level drops. Maybe we should have to plug our cell phones into a cradle before the car will start.
