This is a version of special effects during the 1940's. I have never seen these pictures or knew that we had gone this far to protect ourselves. During World War II the Army Corps of Engineers needed to hide the Lockheed Burbank Aircraft Plant to protect it from a possible Japanese air attack. They covered it with camouflage netting to make it look like a rural subdivision from the air.

Well over 90% of the “tanks” Bill Clinton’s forces destroyed in Serbia were in fact very expensive balloons. Many of them also featured small heaters to produce engine thermal signatures.

Some experts think the number is much closer to 100% than 90%.

This was also done at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Santa Monica (now Santa Monica Airport.)

You’ll notice that you can’t see how they hid the runway. Runways are very hard to hide.

That is pretty cool isn't it. There were a lot of efforts taken during WWII to make large facilities look like something they are not. I saw a lot of this when I was working on a study of Jasper Maskelyne and his work during the Second World War. Unfortunately, a lot of the details attributed to him personally were not factual, there were several incredible efforts made.

One of my favorites is the Q-Site. Particularly the QF-Sites set up in Britain and North Africa. These site were made to look like a British airfield from the air that had already been hit by bombers. German bomber following first waves would spot these sites and drop their ordinance on this fake airfield (needless to say this illusion was a nighttime effect).

This somehow reminds me of the X-33 Venture Star “space plane” program that our country spent so much money on before canceling. They had already built a launch facility before a single craft was built!

That must have been expensive. I wonder if any axis pilot ever glanced over this. And I wonder if google earth would reveal what really was there.
