So JRR Tolkien walks into the HBO meeting and pitches his great new fantasy idea: "It's set long ago, and there's this magic ring, and some hobbits they're like organic dwarves and there's this wizard with a long white beard, and, and
" Four hours later he gets to the end of his summary. "Not bad," says one executive, "but what about the second season?"

This was written two days ago, but the show premiers TONIGHT. I don't have HBO, but I am pretty sure I can find a buddy to record it for me.
I know a lot of freepers have trouble with TV shows with sex and violence, but honestly it looks very well written beyond that.

I am thinking about switching back to HBO from showtime over this.

Interesting take: Sopranos with swords, Dynasty with chainmail. Bottomline: Human nature never changes. The Founding Fathers knew this. That's why they gave us the Constitution.
(sorry for the diversion, now back to the Game of Thrones!)

Will check this out tonight.
I tried watching “Camelot” on STARZ but wasn’t too impressed.

The books are brilliant, but they spare the reader no human depravity whatsoever. It will be interesting to see how much of that carries over to the screen.

I tried reading “Game of Thrones” and didn’t like it to the point I actually put it down. That’s rare for me. I found the characterizations shallow and too much of the fantasy element was generic. That’s just MHO.
But now we know where Boromir really went after he died! ;-)

I'm an Arthurian enthusiast and have been since the 1980s.I have pretty much all the better known non fiction and fiction books published since the 1950s, and a few older, more obscure titles.I had such high hopes for Camelot..."Not too impressed" would be putting it kindly here. But it's attractive eye candy, so I'll probably keep on DVRing it.
I am looking forward to TGOT, and I haven't read the books (though I have read other books by the author.)

"I tried watching Camelot on STARZ but wasnt too impressed." Arthur looked like he would be more comfortable selecting fabrics than fighting.

I totally agree. The books are great. In my opinion it will be hard for the books to be translated on TV, but am curious and will watch to see.
If you enjoy George RR Martin’s books, I’d recommend reading Patrick Rothfuss’ The KingKiller Chronicles.

First three books were great, fourth book was OK, and still waiting for the 5th book after many, many years. Obviously not LOTR or Conan- but very, very enjoyable if you like this genre.

The books are the best modern Fantasy series, period. I put it up against LOTR, and in many ways its better.
The author has NO FEAR about manhandling his characters... and it is impossible to predict. If you have a chance, the “Song of ice and fire” is worth the read. And the re-read. And the re-re-read. And the 4th time around.
Too bad Martin is a raving liberal. sigh...

Her character also has a gross “relationship” with her brother. Total turn off, doesn’t matter what she looks like.

One does not simply walk into Mordor... but a new fantasy series is another matter ;)
This does look interesting will have to check it out, but I got to love the veiled hatred the Guardian seems to have for LOTR and Narnia, just because Tolkien and Lewis refused to lace either with gratuitous sex

I am 100% sure it will be on the bit torrent networks ready for download. I usually download instead of paying $80 monthly for cable.
