Sex trafficking in the U.S. called ‘epidemic’
The Washington Times ^ | Saturday, April 23, 2011

When she first showed up at Children of the Night, a privately-funded residential facility, Jane was angry. Arrested more than 20 times as a prostitute, she had been hardened by the street. She threw things at her counselors. Everyone was terrified in having to deal with her.

“She was just afraid. She was use to being treated so rough,” said Lois Lee, the Los Angeles group’s founder and president. “She didn’t know what to do with someone nice.”

Jane, not her real name, was just 14 when her life was hijacked in Seattle by a 36-year-old man who said he loved her and promised to give her a better life. It was an easy sell: The product of a troubled home, she was sexually molested by her father’s roommate — the abuse beginning when she was 4. She also was molested at the daycare center where she was taken every day.

“My mom was a junkie,” Jane, now 17, said in a recent interview. “I lived with my dad. He was up and down with his moods. He had a marijuana addiction — I can’t remember much of my childhood. I block it out.”

Jane said the molestation made her shy and when she finally told someone about it — her aunt — her father turned away from her. “I needed his support, but he started to shut down,” she said. “I figured he didn’t care anymore (about me) and so I didn’t care anymore. I just started staying away from my house.”

She ended up with a family friend, a woman who forced her to work as a prostitute and sell drugs. That’s when she met James Jackson, the man she called Jay, who convinced her to go with him to Portland, Ore.

From the article:

Most experts say the number of children sexually exploited in the U.S. or at risk of being exploited is between 100,000 and 300,000.

Quotes such as the above trigger my mathematical B.S. meter off the scale. The facts are probably horrendous enough, but now I am very, very skeptical. If the facts are so horrendous, why does the author feel the need to inflate them with statements such as "sexually exploited in the U.S. or at risk of being exploited". The second group is obviously far, far larger than the first group, and extremely difficult to determine. The first group itself is merely very hard to determine. It begins to sound like a victimhood scam.

Sex and drugs never hurt anybody. Just ask the pimps and drug dealers. Oh, and the Democrat party. Wait...they’re the same thing.

Scary that even some folks on FR seem to think that these young women aren't victims, or want this life.

Glad to see more FReepers educating themselves about this subject. It's horrible what's happening to our young people; many against their will. Hold your children close!

Actually, your personal desire to not believe something unpleasant created your mathematical B.S. meter out of whole cloth, because police arrests as well as photographs seized from child pornographers have supported these numbers for decades.

Empirical evidence trumps marktwain's B.S. meter.

"Glad to see more FReepers educating themselves about this subject."

This most definitely is a sad situation in our country whatever the numbers. I'm edified to see that privately funded organizations such as in the article receive enough support to continue on. So people do care.

There are lots of child prostitutes from Mexico and Central America in New Orleans. No one does anything about it.

There ae tons of Freepers that will be in later and explain to us that there is no such thing as a Marijuana addiction.

Drug addicts and Marijuana smokers are responsible for terrorism in Mexico

As a FORMER Marijuana smoker I agree 100%

however I am FOR legalization

JUst like anything else, you can overdo it.

In small quantities it is very relaxing and has helthful beneftis. (creativity, mood, anti-nausea, stops your hair from falling out)

But if you smoke all day every day it is VERY BAD for you (kust like if you drank alcohol all day every day)

It makes you paranoid beyond belief and unable to function normally. But if you drank alcogol like that youw ould also be out on the street

So... everything in moderation, and stop the PROFIT by making it legal

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They used to say the same thing about alcohol...it causes crime. So they outlawed alcohol. They changed their mind after awhile. Some say the same thing about guns. Some make similar claims about religion. So outlaw guns and religion and we should all be perfect, right?
The problem with accuracy stems from the border-situation: because there is so much unknown influx that adds a lot of uncertainty, this is compounded by the fact of different probabilities for illegals vs citizens/legal-residents falling into child-prostitution.
Isn’t that the theme of Soviet-style Communism?
We live in a society that has very little respect for life.
Whether you're pro-Life or Pro-Abort, you cannot deny the biology and genetics of what an abortion entails - the legal dousing of a human life because our culture says that life has little or no value.
All life is precious, and as humans we are made in the image of God, and God will not be mocked.
How would making it legal stop the profit? Anything that is for sale- legal or illegal has profit and there are many legal things with a large profit margin.
I would be interested in a source. What I found particularily problematic was the inclusion of the "at risk of being exploited" category. Presumably, this is a larger category than those being exploited, as those being exploited come from that group. I would appreciate it if you would explain how the "at risk of being exploited" category is defined and enumerated. Presumably, they would not show up on the numbers of arrests and child pornographers, as those would be in the "being exploited" category.
I really want this abuse and slavery to be prevented.
People, stay home with your teens. Don’t think that once they are teens you can work 24/7. Trust me, it’s not safe for them. They have beautiful innocent bodies, sex drives, and about 1/8 the wisdom of you. They are still little kids.. Don’t let them out of your sight.
I would like to see harsher penalties for adults caught with teens, and tougher law enforcement on pimps and slave traders. Infiltrate the farm and factory illegal workers because they are all offered tricks with underaged slave prostitutes. Get in there and catch these people and free these poor girls.
Keep girls safe. Boys too.
This is the result of the sexual revolution: rejecting the moral absolute that sex is for marriage only. Not before, not outside of, not with the same sex, not with children, not with animals, not by yourself with pornography. The slippery slope is very real. What first may have seemed like not very extreme - "well, everyone has sex before marriage [no they don't!]" now is "it doesn't hurt kids that much, heck - people used to get married at 13 and 14". Or "it's just descriptions of child pornography". Or this one, seen it a lot lately "Sure it's distasteful but we can't have censorship".
And complaints that the numbers of children in the sex trade are inflated?? Then gimme some other numbers. And these numbers are at any given time. How many over ten years? Twenty years? And what happens to them when or IF they grow up?
The official Libertarian Party platform is no holds barred porn and prostitution. What's their answer to child sex trade? Government intervention would be needed (as now) to stop it but they don't want any government intervention.
