SAN DIEGO Patrons in bars across the country are raising toasts in the air, hoping the gesture of gratitude would somehow reach the clandestine Navy SEAL team that took down Osama bin Laden. Millions of others are turning to social networks with their thoughts.

There are reports that this take-down was being exercised in a mockup of the compound both stateside & in Bagram. I have no way of knowing if that is true, but it could have a lot to do with which unit was both available & proximate to the training locations.
Another possible explanation may have to do with interoperability problems. Navy personnel, Navy ships, Naval Aviation... JSOC was formed to eliminate a lot of that, but fear of those kinds of inter-service frictions might remain.
I’m thinking that these Blackhawks (SeaHawks?) had ground logistics support. Perhaps a Navy/Marine Osprey on the ground to refuel. They might have chosen that option rather than risk air-to-air refueling being spotted on Pak radar.
The third guy on the recently published Reuters photos of the inside of the campound (photos leaked by a Pakistani official) is definitely the dead body of Khaled Bin Laden, Osamas son, that being the first visual and undeniable proof that Bin Laden was at that campound that night.

It’s my understanding that it was a joint mission comprised of CIA, SEAL, and Delta. It was broken down to 5 elements...equipment, rear yard, front yard, house levels 1, 2, and 3. As to the SEALS getting the lead, what Branch does the Joint Chiefs of Staff represent?
The SEALs have been in AfPak for a bit now, and I think their experience might make them the best trained for this type of new war.
Frankly, I have no idea, but I’m guessing that qualified people made the decision of who could best get this job done.
For all we know, DELTA was also part of the op. Perhaps they figured it would be best to tell the media it was Team 6 so that they follow that trail.
Again, who knows?
Thats really a game played by amateurs,,,trying to say which is “better”. Either is very capable of doing this relatively simple mission.
Take out the fact that Osama was there, and it really was a straightforward deal. And to them, the superflous detail of his name didnt change much,,,
This question is basically like asking why F-15s are flying cover and not F-22s. Pointless to pros,,,
Not really, because SEALS, 75th RR, and 1st SFOD-D all have different skills sets and are expert primarily in certain areas. SEALS are experts at being squids, RR in light infantry tactics, and 1st SFOD-D in CT, and “snatch and grabs”.
“...no longer any Seal Team Six.”
There never were any Navy Seals. They are just Delta Force with flippers.
Ask any Army vet.
It did not work out during training exercises.
The "burial at sea" was pre-planned. In the training exercise, the Delta Force Blackhawks delivered the team to an exact reconstruction of the hideout, they "killed" Osama, put his "body" into the one of the Blackhawks and then fly it to a Navy CVN off the coast of California.
The Delta Force pilot then looked down at the CVN and said, "I'll go the Hell and back for Delta Force but I'm NOT landing on the pitching deck of a Navy carrier!" ;-)
“Ask any Army vet.”
Go Navy...BEAT Army!!!! ....and they DID....AGAIN!
;-))))))
Ok,, you’re right. I bet it was because Chuck Norris wasn’t available. Better?
The truth is that as exotic as the raid seems,, it was WELL within the capability of LAPD SWAT with months to train up. The raid was WELL within the capability of ANY SEAL Team, or US Army SF elements. With the prep time available, it was doable for a Marine FAST team.
What exactly was the wildly exotic skill set there? They landed IN the compound,,, ingress was no prob. Enemy forces were minimal and were wiped out, as they would have been by any assaulting force. They cleared a midsized house. Osama was shot as he needed to be because anything he did, including standing up and raising his arms in surrender, could have detonated a bomb. Then they took his carcass to the bird, grabbed anything that looked like intel, and flew away.
By far the biggest threat was that Osama had 2000 pounds of C-4 in the basement rigged to a light switch. Thats reason numero uno he was shot dead. And a minor threat from nearby Paki forces. But there was probably US air ready to stop That kind of silliness. Be assured, the rest was solidly in the skill set of any elite infantry unit. That’s true in spades for SEAL or Delta.
But my bet is on Chuck Norris already busy.
“....and they DID....AGAIN!”
Well, I suppose we had to let you guys have SOMETHING.
I know it’s been tough on your outfit. Cruising the oceans for a decade trying to find the Afghanistan port.
And those poor Seals from the TV commercial are getting really worn out. Constantly slipping, under the cover of clouded moonlight, in and out of every nice sandy beach on the planet and failing to find the one where people speak Afghani.
(Dang CIA map guys, real funny, now those navy guys are suffering from serious shrinkage!)
And the truth is,,, the high end bunches have massive cross pollination. It’s a safe bet that Delta people were there too,,, or were quietly watching the Paki barracks ready to start a fight there if they tried to react, (maybe there days before watching comings and goings) and USAF controllers were probably also on tap to direct supporting air if needed.
It was probably more joint than they would detail out for us.
BUT...you forgot something. It is now the NAVY that can say, with regard to 9/11, ....MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
;-))))))))))
is there ANYTHING more fun than an Army vs Navy thread?
“is there ANYTHING more fun than an Army vs Navy thread?”
Yep...the Army/Navy Football game....when Navy wins!
;-D
ST6 provided the security element, while the Jedi did the assault.
ST6 had the accidental last Oct, but McRaven is in charge of JSOC. So it wouldn't surprise me if they did give it to them.
I am proud to say.... an Auburn grad.!!
Maybe because they got burnt a few times with Osama in their sights and being told no-go, so they said FU and get someone else to do it.
