The REAL Differences Between Coke And Pepsi People
Business Insider ^ | 13 May 2011 | Alana Horowitz

You probably can't describe the difference between Coke and Pepsi. Perhaps one cola seems sweeter, but you couldn't certainly distinguish them in a taste test. Yet you know without a doubt which one you like more.

The fierce brand loyalties of Coke vs. Pepsi are a marvel of American marketing.

Slightly older, Coca-Cola was always the dominant brand.

Pepsi gained market share in the middle of the century with a series of ad campaigns. In 1975 the first Pepsi Challenge claimed that people preferred Pepsi in a blind taste test. The brand was also marketed as the soda of the new generation, with celebrity spokespeople like Michael Jackson.

Today America's preference is firmly divided by demographics, according to research by Hunch.com. Surprisingly there's a big divide based on wealth and education.

I prefer coke. It has a sweeter, more “vanilla” taste as opposed to Pepsi, which tastes lighter to me, more “citrusy”.

I prefer Pepsi. But congratulations for being the one person on this thread who was able to accurately and objectively describe the two flavors.

The flavors of various sodas have sometimes suffered from the transition out of glass, into aluminum and now plastic. An original, cane sugar Coke in the small glass bottle is a real treat, awesome. They were better than Pepsi, much as that pains me to admit, since Pepsi has a more local origin whereas Coke was more of a Georgia thing.

Pepsi fared better in cans. Coke started to seem a little too sweet and slightly flat by comparison. In plastic, it’s Pepsi hands down. The too-sweet flatness was aggravated by the move.

Diet Coke tastes salty to me, but Pepsi does not. It’s the better of the two diet sodas as well.

One old favorite that fared even worse across the various containers is Mt. Dew. It doesn’t even resemble the original in anything but the dayglow color. The diet version is nearly undrinkable.

Pepsi is sweeter and less carbonated than Coke.

The Coke and Pepsi of today taste nothing like they did when I was a kid 50 years ago.

No, they don't. I understand the reason for that is back then they used sugar cane for sweetening; now they use sugar beets.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but back in the 1940s and 1950s (when the OldPossum was a YoungPossum) when you took a swig of Coke you got a pleasant burning sensation. It's missing today.

You're only as young as you feel.

My Father hand his Brother owned an Esso Gas Station on Long Island when I was a kid.

To this day, I remember the Coke Machine they had in front with the crank handle and the bottle opener. You got the 6.5 ounce bottles for a dime and they were freezing. You chugged them down and it was the best rush you could get, especially on a hot humid day.

Amen. I too can still remember how good they were.

Here in Pennsylvania I occasionally come across some of those 6.5-oz. bottles in the woods. Must have been there a long, long time.

“Same here. It’s all “coke”. You call it a soda here and people look at you nasty because they know you “aren’t from around here”. LOL”

Yankee is the word that comes to my mind when I hear soda. :)

Me too but I was too coward to say it. :-) We have a local Cracker Barrel that my husband loves to go to eat. I hate it! The food is great but Cracker Barrel's are the place to eat for our neighbors to the North when they travel. We always ask for a place in the back away from the "travelers" due to the noise and confusion. They all try to talk at the same time and the longer they talk the louder they get until they are all screaming over each other.

Where I live that is called rude and the locals avoid those places like the plague. Down here if you talk loud enough for people at the next table to hear the conversation you are too loud and are considered rude. We also only talk one at a time. When I can hear people talk over each other and they are in another section of the restaurant that goes beyond rude. That is obnoxious and shows a serious lack of manners!

Probably a Coke snorter as well, as she must have done right before writing this snobby screed.

Both Coke *and* Pepsi hurt like hell if you try to snort them.

All that carbonation up in your sinuses...

Cheers!

No, I try and stay away from sodas and sugar-water stuff.
Sprite if I have to. .

When I do drink a soft drink (which isn't often), I prefer Coca-Cola.

But I do not read The New York Times. ;-)

“Down here if you talk loud enough for people at the next table to hear the conversation you are too loud and are considered rude.”

Now ya gone and brought up another point. I have neighbors across the street. Two of them frequent the porch and spend the day yackin. I can sit in my porch swing and follow their conversation. I’ve wondered if they’re both deaf, but I decided they’re not, they just have issues.

People bother me.... :-P

When I was in high school they transitioned from the glass 16 ounce bottles of Mt. Dew to plastic. That was a huge change.

B.S. ??

I think so. I don't drink Coke or Pepsi. My choice is ice tea. I did work for Coca Cola for about a year. At a fast food place, I ordered ice tea, but it was put in a Pepsi logo cup. I was not allowed back into the plant with that cup. I had to gulp it down in the parking lot before I was allowed back in. I'd like to know the characteristics of those who prefer tea over sodas.
