Saving Sight, Testing Faith
Jewish World Review ^ | 6/2/2011 | Sharon Begley

Stem cells, it seems, have become almost as ubiquitous in medicine as stethoscopes. Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon received injections of stem cells from his own fat and bone marrow to treat an injured shoulder and elbow, his doctor recently revealed. Meanwhile, a Texas hospital is testing whether stem cells from a patient's bone marrow will improve the effectiveness of cardiac bypass surgery. It's enough to suggest that the bitter religious, ethical, and political battles over stem cells that began in 1998 were pointless. If cells harvested from patients themselves can treat disease, perhaps there's no need to use ones obtained from human embryos — with all the questions that raises.

To Robert Lanza, a born and confirmed Catholic, this argument is just another in a long line of attacks that have come at him nonstop for 10 years. As chief medical officer of Advanced Cell Technology, a leading stem-cell company, he has no doubt that adult stem cells will fall woefully short of the promise of embryonic ones. "Adult stem cells can't do all the same tricks," he argues. "There are over 3,000 Americans who die every day from diseases that could be treated with embryonic stem-cell therapies."

As anybody who is been following the embryonic stem cell controversy could tell you, any time the name Advanced Cell Technology appears in an article you better brace yourself for a flood of lies and misinformation. Remember, ACT is the company that claimed could isolate embryonic stem cells without killing the embryos... but when the scientific paper was published months later it turned out that 100% of the embryos had died!

If all goes well, it will be the first study to show whether human embryonic stem cells can cure disease. How ironic! Pray, tell me, how many adult stem cell therapies are already working? If you don't know, I would recommend doing some READING HERE .

The sister, who asked that she not be named so as not to anger Church authorities, says she concluded that "the destruction of embryos [to obtain stem cells] is a gravely immoral act." Praise the Lord for this woman who finally chose to go blind over being accesory to murder.

"There are over 3,000 Americans who die every day from diseases that could be treated with embryonic stem-cell therapies."

3000 every day = 1.1 million per year. The death rate in the US is 8.38 / 1000 people / year, or about 2.5 million per year. So he is saying that 44% of the deaths in the country could be prevented, or at least delayed, by using embryonic (and only embryonic, accept no substitutes) stem cells? Those claims smell the someone hasn't cleaned the barn in a long time.

It will be interesting to see if this exploitation of embryonic human body parts enters into the political season. The current administration has stepped around the restrictions Bush held in place, so that now the taxpayers are helping to fund the killing of embryos to obtain their body parts for medical experimentation and treatments like the one highlighted in this article.

Will subsequent articles be as dishonest as this one? ... "After President Bush banned the use of federal money for most embryonic-stem-cell research in 2001, it was left to private companies (or academic labs using private money) to carry the ball." The author lies boldly, revealing her agenda ... Bush did not ban use of federal money for most embryonic stem cell research. What Bush did was limit federal monies to research using already existing lines of embryonic stem cell lines, banning federal monies to research which would produce new ESC lines by killing living embryos. The ignorance of the public is something liars like this 'journalist' rely on to deceive so a hidden agenda is promoted. When lies hallmark a side of the debate, you can be sure whom is at the core of that side's debating.

That’s ACT to you! Years ago, a small group of students in one of my college intro biology classes brought me a newspaper article commenting on ACT’s claim of being able to isolate stem cells from embryos without killing them. The idea sounded right, remove one cell from the early embryo, and allow the rest to continue its development. I told the group that, if the news came from ACT, I considered it very unlikely to be true. About 3 months later I found the paper published in a scientific journal about their “technique” and there they reported 100% death rate for their embryos.

BTW, I have on line a little book available for free which can help understand the vagaries of stem cell research, cloning, and abortion. The link is on my profile page for anyone interested in studying up on a subject unfamiliar to them.

It's the "promise" part ~ just isn't happening.

I have a bottle of "Jumba Juice". It has great promise for resurrecting the dead and healing all ills. Not likely though ~ just a promise ~

It will be interesting to see if this exploitation of embryonic human body parts enters into the political season.

Probably not (hopefully not!!!), dear brother in Christ. I suspect this is not the season for it (read: Ecclesiastes for background here).

The people are focused on personal financial/national fiscal issues right now. If Obama is to be beaten in the next presidential polling, it will be because he has been shown by his opponent to have been totally incompetent on issues of national solvency, let alone prosperity; not to mention foreign (national security interest) policy.

Of course, the GOP is famous for shooting itself in the foot at critical times — by raising divisions within itself. There are so many "interest groups" under the GOP tent: social conservatives, economic conservatives, constitutional conservatives, Tea Party folks, Libertarians, Blue-dog Democrats (increasingly these days).

But it seems to me it's going to take a combined majority consensus from each of these "factions" to defeat Obama.

So I only hope and pray we conservatives of whatever stripe do not spend the next 17 months wasting ammo on each other; but rather, all keep our powder dry — to take down Public Enemy #1: The national domestic enemy of the United States who currently occupies the Oval Office, in November 2012....

United we stand; divided we fall.

Thanks so very much for writing, Dear brother in Christ!

Embryos are so small that removing one cell from them IS a big deal. That’s a far larger percentage of the embryos body than one cell out of ours.

Since those cells specialize later on, who knows what organs would be affected and how by that one missing cell.

The democrat party has so degenerated that now the3y lie constantly. They shown whom is the inspiration of their political capitalizing by doing his thing ... he is the father of lies, a murderer from the start. My concern is that the democrats, now having the meida firmly in their porpaganda pocket, will seek to lie this issue of stem cells and embryonic stem cells into a demagogued issue. The people are not familiar with the differences in types of stem cells and the media will repeat the calculated lies fed to them by the DNC/Axelrod lie express, conflating all stem cell uses into ‘republicans want to stop stem cell cures.’ The media are despicable, but those feeding the calculated lies to the fools in media serve a most deadly evil mind, and I’m afraid they do so now willingly, whereas before they were ignorant but have so bankrupted spiritually that they serve evil knowingly if they believe they can gain power from that service. These are indeed interesting but also horribly twisted times with a chronic narcissistic liar at the helm, served by an army of dead soul democrat socialists.
