Pro Creators: Sperm Donors Are Dads to Dozens
Fox News & New York Post ^ | June 19, 2011 | unkonwn

Posted on 06/20/2011 2:46:34 AM PDT by sodpoodle

When he was a cash-strapped college student 20 years ago, Todd Whitehurst didn't think too deeply on the consequences of donating sperm. Then, when he was 41, he got an e-mail from a girl named Virginia. "She said, basically, 'I'm 14, and I think I'm your daughter,' " explained Whitehurst, now a 45-year-old medical engineer. Shortly after, he found a son, Tyler, now 14. And another, Gavin, now 16. That led to another child, and another, and yet another. "It was definitely overwhelming," Whitehurst said. "I'm not even sure how many children there are." So far he has found nine kids sired by his sperm. Statistically speaking, said one biogeneticist, Whitehurst could be the father of 42 to 60 children. Thanks to a lack of industry regulation, high totals are all too probable, especially for prolific college kids like Whitehurst -- who donated weekly for about three years, for $50 a pop, at a clinic on the Stanford University campus in the 1980s and '90s.

First we had puppy mills - but at least the AKC registered the litters!!!!!

I always found this both disgusting and terrifying. Does not the Bible admonish men to "not spill their seed"?

Wisdom - lost for the ages.

I think the real issue in that story was the treatment of the wife and the husbands refusal to let her have a child, not the spilling of seed per se.

This would fall under sex outside of wedlock and bringing life into the world without providing the fathering that was meant to be.

Correct: Genesis 38:9-10.

However, the rationale is comparable.

God created Adam & Eve (men & women) with natural laws to pass down to their descendants.

Medical manipulation and lasciviousness have destroyed those golden rules.

Incest by proxy, adolescent promiscuity, revolving shack-ups or multiple ‘marriages’, lack of male parenting and homosexuality are all contributing to the destruction of a Godly society.

Don' take it out of context. A man didn't impregnate his wife. The child would be a forefather in the line of David and thus of Christ. If no child was born to this woman then that line never would have been.

Lays it out well...TAMAR, FOREMOTHER OF DAVID

From the link:

***He never wanted to be a parent; he saw the sperm donation as a favor to a friend.***

Obviously, he didn’t take biology classes.

(good link Impy; another example of the chaos that is our children’s cross to bear)

Got to remember that also in the same book of Genesis, Abraham, seeing that his wife Sarah did not have a child, Sarah directed Abraham to father a child via Hagar, the maid-servant.

At least in the ‘hood the guys do it the old fashioned way.

I’ve said for 40+ years sperm donation is a mistake.
Their must be enough sperm on ice to repopulation the world.

At some point the sexual act will be omitted from procreation. :(

...lack of male parenting...
Don't women deserve the same treatment? Isn't lack of female parenting just as culpable in your scenario? Isn't abortion as birth control by women just as contemptible?

If you're going to bash men why not do it openly instead of doing it obliquely with so little subtlety?

The moral of the story:

A man & women should marry until death, in order to raise children of that marriage together. Be faithful, so that parentage & family values are established.

I believe we can attest that biological fathers and mothers are naturally driven to treasure & protect their own offspring. It helps if they know with certainty who those children might be.

It is terrifying to note the increase in child abuse, child abductions and murders by ‘extended’ family members. Might this be the result of ‘mixed up’ maternal and paternal proxies? i.e. New York adoptive parents-Steinbergs, Kyron Horman, Caylee Anthony et.al.

Don’t get all huffy.

Young man in my family impregnated his long-term live-in girl friend. He belatedly begged her to marry him - but she took off (out of country) with the child and he has no resources or recourse to custody. He and his parents are devastated.

Marriage protects men, women and children.

Whitehurst could be the father of 42 to 60 children

And in all likelihood those children all live in the same geographic area. I wonder what the odds are of two of them meeting and, not knowing that they're half-siblings, ending up in a relationship that results in marriage?

“women who are cavalier about aborting their ‘unplanned’ pregnancies are even more reprehensible than the naive men who impregnate them without considering the possibility of a son or daughter being aborted or worse, abused by a ‘new boyfried.”

That's pure idealism. Reality often gets in the way as even you note with your "should".
What if staying married does more harm than good for a family? Will the children benefit if the parents are constantly arguing and bickering or if relationships devolve to something like alcohol or drug abuse?

Even the Bible gives recourse to divorce. Pigeonholing doesn't work.

I’ve often thought that this is most likely the case with welfare babies as well. Gubmint becomes the daddy, and the so-called men who sire multiple children on multiple welfare queens are not held responsible...(more cash for the mamas). I wonder what the results of an epidemiological study - looking for birth defects - would be in the high-welfare areas...

Probably no one wants to look.

You are deliberately twisting my comments to fit your own jaded mindset.

The young man in my family is devastated by the loss of contact with his child. He and his daughter are victims of a controlling young woman - who appears to believe that she (because she gave birth) should be the custodial parent.

Traditional religious-based, social norms of virginity before marriage and fidelity afterwards were demonstrably superior to what passes as socially acceptable behavior today.

One note on the Onan story, that "wife" you speak of was his brother's widow and under Law he owed her a child that would be called his brother's. He was struck down for repeated disobedience because any child with her would not be known as his.

I'm not twisting anything. Your words speak volumes on their own.

The young man in my family is devastated by the loss of contact with his child.
Well he's obviously, to use your words, just a naive man who impregnated her without considering the possibility that she might run off with his child.

Traditional religious-based, social norms of virginity before marriage and fidelity afterwards were demonstrably superior to what passes as socially acceptable behavior today.
The concept sure does. Pure Norman Rockwell.

Real life, however, isn't a portrait. It's messy, dirty and has never been the idealized world you're trying to make it seem with your quaint depiction.

People, please realize, especially after Father's Day yesterday, that a father is a man who raises a child. He fathers! Borrowing genetics from a 3rd party does Not Make that 3rd party a parent.

If a couple can't have the child they long for more than anything in the world, they can fight infertility by adoption or gamete donation. Neither is a moral failing. These options are ways to love and raise children. Genetics do not matter in love or childrearing.

Other than foster-to-adopt, adoption costs a lot of money and it's hard to get an infant (thus without serious emotional problems that may be lifelong). Using donor sperm if the father is infertile, or eggs if the mother is, would cost less, and would mean you could control the important prenatal care and early attachment and love of the baby.

The media and unthinking people love to CROW about how wrong these solutions are, how untasteful and immoral. They are wrong. The donor only provided some genetics. The donor is not a "dad" and never will be. He is only the source of some genetic traits. In the end, the genetic traits are just cocktail party conversation. What a parent Does with his child is parenting.

****The donor only provided some genetics. The donor is not a “dad” and never will be.****

However, the point of the article and the discussion - is the anonymity of the paid sperm donors - until the IVF children begin to have genetic medical problems or marry a half-sibling.

***Real life, however, isn’t a portrait.***

Each of us has traits that determine the journey and final destination of the life we are blessed to live.

Would it were possible that only men & women of good character and gentle souls meet, marry and raise children - while those people with inferior traits be infertile?

God would have made it thus - but he gave us faith, judgement, humility, trust and optimism. Some of us fail miserably, some succeed against all odds and some of us are just damn lucky.

I feel lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a problem with the anonymity of donors. I think that if the donors signed up for anonymity then it should stay that way forever. I think that donors and recipient couples should respect each other’s original contracts. If they wish a “contact in the future” relationship, great. If the donors wish to remain anonymous, then that is fine too. However, I guess what we are seeing is that both parties are changing their minds years later.

I think that children conceived in third party donor situations, like adopted children, have legitimate questions and curiosity and future contact for them with the donor is fine. They will see for themselves that donors are genetic donors, nothing but parlor tricks, and their parents are the ones who raised them, all the sleepless nights, the lessons, the love, the sweat, the tears.

Science and opportunists have taken over another of God’s (or nature’s) functions and turned the gift of life into a fashion accessory for those who can afford to pay.

Human donor sperm and eggs are now harvested and traded as commodities. The demand for human children is being accelerated by single mothers, gay parents and aging, infertile couples. There’s something selfish and unnatural in those categories.

Sorry if my opinion offends - but nothing good happens when we play God - just because we don’t like His rules.

Time to re-educate our sons on the sanctity of their sperm. It’s not chopped liver!!!!!!!!!

Seems like the natural rhythms of life have been interrupted. In the past; wars, natural disasters and plague have propelled increases in human reproduction.

I suppose we could view the new forms of procreation as a counter to the mass abortions of the last decades.
