Maybe I should just join them.

Here I sit. I just lost my day job, down almost 800 dollars of income a week. They "forgot" to pay me Friday (the day they let me go) even though it was payday. It's been a rough week at my personal business. A trade deal went south between a sign maker and my landlord. I'm caught in the middle with the rent bill. Wife had a mini-stroke but thankfully is doing well and is back to work.

So I was looking forward to a halfway decent weekend enjoying the 4th.

Then the wife comes home. (no. it's not a joke about her)

She tells me the story about my MIL, SIL, her Boyfriend and their kid. All 4 of them live in a 1 br apartment (Knew this) paid for by section 8 (knew this to), with cable tv, cable internet and each one has a cell phone.

she took them shopping.

SIL/boyfriend buy 200 bucks worth of video games and other worthless electronics. Stock up on high end baby crap and other things my kids never had. Push 2 carts around filling them with brand name foods and spendy meat.

Come to find out between the 4 of them they get 3000 dollars in SSI/AFDC payments And close to 1000 in food stamps while basically living rent free. (even part of the electric bill is paid) They get all this stuff even while state government is shut done.

Here I sit, sweating my butt off because I can't afford to run the a/c, no cable tv (I do have a low cost internet connection, won't support online gaming or streaming) with a wife that just recovered from a mini stroke, has type 1 and fybro, 2 autistic kids with learning disabilities and I was working 90+ hours a week trying to support all this along with paying for medical.

I am so damn close to just joining them on the dole.

have turned the safety net into a hammock.

Now that is funny. Humans are creative little buggers.

This story is not unusual. Friend renovated a duplex. Had one good working family as tenants. Accepted a Section 8 family, a couple with a child the mother has from a previous boyfriend.

So in short order the Section 8 male got drunk, threatened to kill the working tenants, got arrested but the working folks are moving out in fear for their lives.

The Section 8 couple do not work. They pay $200 a month (I guess from welfare) and you and I subsidize the other $1000 of their rent.

Just maybe one of these two can work rather than live on our money and threatening to kill working people?

I so not believe you.

And so what kind of extraordinary ESP do you have, what magical insight, allows you to determine that this unfortunate man is lying? What evidence do you have? How on earth do you flatter yourself that you could determine whether or not he is telling the truth about his situation? You have an ugly, judgmental attitude about this, instead of the compassion someone who calls herself "Fatima" might be expected to have.

Do what you have to do regarding welfare. Cook from scratch, do anything that you can do to use less propane or gas for heating later on. Save. Store food. Start growing and preserving your own food, if you can. Repair, build, etc. Prepare for the much worse economy ahead.

“Last time we looked at SSI for the kids (and the wife, she should qualifiy for disability) we where told it’d take years and a lawyer to get it all done.”

It depends. When I suffered a traumatic brain injury, my application was submitted in March 2006 and I was approved - retroactively - in October the same year.

It’s all in having the right documentation; my doctors did a great job. SSI is there for those who are too disabled to be able to work - we pay (or paid) into it hoping we’ll never need it.

Cableguymn, do whatever you have to do for your family, there is no shame, nor should anyone ever judge you, it’s your decision.
As far as your wife, check into EFT for faster healing and stress relief. I’m into more natural cures and don’t have much good for doctors. Would have sent you more info but you don’t have any contact info set up on your home page.
Your family is in my prayers.

You story grabs at me because I am closely involved with more than one family dealing with the same conundrum. Because they have worked and tried to be responsible, there is no help for them anywhere. They tried to do the right thing, pay their bills and protect their credit rating. Now they are stuck and their good credit means nothing. The banks won’t help and there is no relief, so the only step is to violate every value they have lived up to and burn everyone who has trusted them to go on the dole and join the people who have helped cause (or contribute to) the problem.

SSI should take six months and will be retroactive to the filing date. The lawyer takes his fee from the first check.

This will also automatically qualify your children for other benefits as well. I’m pretty sure self employed people pay ss tax, both sides, so you’ve paid into it.

Good luck and God bless.

EFT? I’d love to look in to this, but when I google it of course the results are all about wire transfers. Could you give me some details so I can dig in to it?

Thanks!
