Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles said on Aug. 3 that most illegal immigrants are forced to leave their homeland in order to provide a better life for their families.
“Most of the men and women who are here illegally have traveled hundreds even thousands of miles. They have left everything behind, risked their safety and even their lives,” he said.
“They did this, not for their own comfort or selfish needs. They did this to feed their loved ones. To be good mothers and fathers. To be loving sons and daughters.”
Archbishop Gomez made his remarks at the Knight of Columbus' 129th annual convention, this year held in downtown Denver, Colo. from Aug. 2-4.

If I were hungry and needy and robbed the Catholic Church I would still be a criminal even though I would also still be a father, son and whatever but I wouldn’t be an illegal and a criminal for that.
There were a number of FReepers who lauded his appointment (replacing Cardinal Roger Mahony in Los Angeles) due to Gomez's membership in Opus Dei, characterized as a radically-orthodox Catholic group.
IMHO, coming to the defense of criminal lawbreakers doesn't fit with the teachings of Christ. I have real doubts about the orthodoxy of Archbishop Gomez.
I agree. They are spouting nothing but nonsense as I am sure they know the truth. When people think they are smarter than God; they lose their way.
The Archbishop is correct. They are mothers, fathers, etc. and not at all different from ourselves, other than the fact that they have ENTERED THIS COUNTRY ILLEGALLY.
So, it is he who is missing the point.

For the same measure, if any unemployed American tries to sneak into Mexico illegally to work in the maquiladoras, border factories, there, he would be arrested and shut in prison until someone paid tens of thousands of dollars in bribes to get him back half as good as he was before.

Truth be known, too many of those illegals, even with families back home, have mistresses here bearing American children, are alcolol-dependent, and with the younger set are involved in gangs like MS-13. Not exactly Ward Cleaver or choir boys. And not so good on their attendance at Sunday Mass, Archbishop. THey stigmatize hispanics who are here legally and are proud Americans, but must now endure the stain of these illegals.
Another criminal enabler to add to the list is Mobile's Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi who claims that Alabama's immigration law “attacks our very understanding of what it means to be a Christian.”

I wish these scions of various religions would stick to the Word and preparing for the end times instead of getting into immigration, the environment and other issues - it brings more of the Left’s out-of-context WWJD responses as an “argument”.
