Illegal immigrants are first 'mothers and fathers, sons and daughters,' says Archbishop Gomez
Catholic News Agency ^ | Aug 4, 2011 | Marianne Medlin

Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles said on Aug. 3 that most illegal immigrants are forced to leave their homeland in order to provide a better life for their families.

“Most of the men and women who are here illegally have traveled hundreds even thousands of miles. They have left everything behind, risked their safety and even their lives,” he said.

“They did this, not for their own comfort or selfish needs. They did this to feed their loved ones. To be good mothers and fathers. To be loving sons and daughters.”

Archbishop Gomez made his remarks at the Knight of Columbus' 129th annual convention, this year held in downtown Denver, Colo. from Aug. 2-4.

“Our perspective on this issue will change if you begin to see these 'illegals' for who they really are – mothers and fathers, sons and daughters – not much different from yourselves.” -- Archbishop Gomez

He emphasized that immigration “is not a problem but an opportunity.”

Well, that's true, but Jesus was content to render unto Caesar that which was Caesar’s; U.S. law is what governs immigration.

If the millions of mexican illegal aliens would have actually stayed in Mexico, and developed careers and jobs there, and hadn’t left their country, perhaps the crime element wouldn’t be running rampant and these tens of millions of mexicans could clean up their own country and make it a better place for themselves and their families ot live and work.

You know, if they really cared about their families and their country, they wouldn’t have left it and left a vacuum that got filled by banditos. You get 20 million mexicans coming home to clean house by overwhelming the crime elements in their country, it would be a massive step forward for Mexico, security wise and economically.

Coming here illegally because your country sucks is not a valid reason for doing so!

Try: trespassers, liars, and thieves.

And you Archbishop Gomez: encouraging people to live a life of sin is not the duty of a man who claims to preach the Gospel of Truth.

If lives were in danger - it would be different.
This is a matter of people wanting more 'stuff'.
Its certainly OK to want 'stuff' - but not at the expense of living a life of sin by lying and stealing (as one does when they falsely represent themselves as being legal residents of a Nation) to achieve it.

And yet Mexico is touting it's high-growth economy projected at 5.5%. If that's true, why is Archbishop Gomez claiming that these illegals come here for a better life? Things are supposedly better there.

With all due respect for Archbishop Gomez: They come here to game the system and take from our entitlement programs. There's no defense for such illegal behavior. Period.

“Archbishop Jose H. It's "interesting" that Archbishop Gomez chooses to completely ignore that key fact. And, as cited by the URL in post #7:

"The Catholic Church and the Department of Justice have filed lawsuits to stop the enforcement of Alabama's new immigration law, which Governor Robert Bentley calls the “strongest” in the nation.

This is just insane! It's the false "gospel" of social justice being preached instead of authentic Christianity.

Americans care about their kids, too. That’s why they don’t want their kids’ schools to be dangerous, overcrowded and ineffective. They don’t want their kids to be beaten up by illegal gang members, or to have to wait 18 hours in the emergency room, (which happened to a friend of mine recently,) or not even be able to FIND an emergency room because illegals have shut them down. Americans don’t want their kids to get diseases that were formerly eradicated in this country...or to be hit by an unlicensed, uninsured, and/or drunk illegal driver...or to be unable to get a job because they don’t speak Spanish...and on and on. So the Archbishop can spare us his phony sob story about criminal invader parents. In fact, he can stuff it.

We are all for people having better lives, but legally.

The Archbishop should be addressing the human rights violations in Mexico that contribute to them coming here. Americans are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers also, and now there are many Americans having trouble putting food on the table and paying their bills while the illegals have the luxury of paying no taxes, using wic and foodstamps, and working for cash which is promptly sent to Mexico to prop up their country. they are rude, arrogant and refuse to assimilate. I have even been told that our country sucks by an angry illegal who didn’t have a dl or ID to purchase alcohol.

I feel sorry for them, but they are breaking the law.

There were a number of FReepers who lauded his appointment (replacing Cardinal Roger Mahony in Los Angeles) due to Gomez's membership in Opus Dei, characterized as a radically-orthodox Catholic group.

IMHO, coming to the defense of criminal lawbreakers doesn't fit with the teachings of Christ. I have real doubts about the orthodoxy of Archbishop Gomez.

Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph had to pass the Roman border guards LEGALLY to get into Egypt legally. [One component of Jewish troops were settled at the Elephantine as border guards.] The Holy Family were fleeing for their lives because Herod wanted Jesus dead.
Imitate Jesus.
Don`t be a sneaking illegal border crosser.
Nobody forces these illegals to do anything. No one is trying to kill them?
It is called FREE WILL which is Catholic doctrine and this archbishop knows he is a lying wolf in shepherd`s clothing.
For the same measure, if any unemployed American tries to sneak into Mexico illegally to work in the maquiladoras, border factories, there, he would be arrested and shut in prison until someone paid tens of thousands of dollars in bribes to get him back half as good as he was before.
Archbishop, your red Mexican shoe doesn`t fit your yellow American foot and your ``truth`` limps.

Oh - they’re not Catholics, so they don’t count.

The Archbishop, like a lot of Republican elites, try to smoke us with this “hispanic illegals have great fanily values and are conservative, blah, blah.”

Truth be known, too many of those illegals, even with families back home, have mistresses here bearing American children, are alcolol-dependent, and with the younger set are involved in gangs like MS-13. Not exactly Ward Cleaver or choir boys. And not so good on their attendance at Sunday Mass, Archbishop. THey stigmatize hispanics who are here legally and are proud Americans, but must now endure the stain of these illegals.

Just between you and me, mr nortex...i think the current batch of immigrants aka undocumeted democrats answers to a higher call; one even higher than the one his Lamenence Jose answers to ..that’d be the call of the wild south american bird known to us as the TRESSPASSUS-MOOCHERUS. A true bird of prey, one that all Norte Americanos should be very afraid of. I’m hereby treating his lamenence to an immigration eye opener...by pointing him to the following video one he desparately needs to see and comprehend...

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4094926727128068265&q=numbersusa&hl=en#

This is Roy Beck’s celebrated demonstration of the population consequences of current U.S. immigration policies. It is famous and has entertained and shocked audiences across the country for a long time now, I cannot understand how JOSE and or his staff neglected to read it before opining on the subject of immigration. I guess the bishop and his minions are too busy organizing hispanic priest organizations or something. [I don’t think we really need hyphenated American priests, either ...but don’t get me started.]
This video is packed with the facts and analysis that make moral and practical sense of a complex and highly contentious issue. GAZE AWAY YOUR EMINENCE GAZE AWAY. Then lets see a mea culpa for your present presentation...

Another “religious” hack posing as a man of the cloth. I wish these scions of various religions would stick to the Word and preparing for the end times instead of getting into immigration, the environment and other issues - it brings more of the Left’s out-of-context WWJD responses as an “argument”. Even worse when religious leaders start getting out of context to espouse their worldly views....

Spin all you want, these are his own words:

“We have to insist that those who come to our country respect our laws,” the archbishop added. “If they are here illegally, they can’t expect to escape punishment. But I would suggest that intensive, long-term community service would be a far more constructive solution than deportation.”

He supported the failed 2007 immigration bill. He does not believe in upholding the laws on our books. He does not believe illegals should be deported.

In other words, he’s giving the Catholic Church a bad name.

Re: Post 43:
... You really do have Archbishop Gomez wrong here. He became a naturalized citizen by doing it the right way. Do you really know all the facts? He is VERY conservative. You are pegging him wrongly.

I wouldn't know the Archbishop Gomez from Adam. I go by what is printed in the excerpt of this article:

“Most of the men and women who are here illegally have traveled hundreds even thousands of miles. They have left everything behind, risked their safety and even their lives,” he said. “They did this, not for their own comfort or selfish needs. They did this to feed their loved ones. To be good mothers and fathers. To be loving sons and daughters.”

Is he not praising people who have entered this Country illegally? Is he not therefore encouraging people to sin: to lie and steal? How can he say that they didn't enter this country for selfish needs? That's exactly why they stole across the borders. They weren't starving. Maybe they didn't have as much as they'd like (join the club) - but they weren't starving.

You say that he is a naturalized citizen. Wonderful - but this article implies that he's encouraging people who choose to break the law. Do you agree with that? Is this article a lie? I don't have any great respect for the media - so if you tell me that they are outright lying about the Archbishop, and misquoting his comments - I'll accept that. But based on the posted excerpt - the Archbishop was encouraging sin - which would make him a friend of satan and not a friend of the Truth.
