LATEST FROM THE THRIFT SHOP

On my last trip to the thrift shop there was a mysterious Nauguhyde bag in the show case. Y'all know me, LOL, I just had to look!

The Pentax ME Super was made around 1980, it's a compact by SLR standards but built like a brick. This is the SE version, top ot the crop.

I got a 50mm f2 Pentax lens and an 80-200 f4,5, all in mint condition, a 2X TC and a bunch of filters, plus a really nice bag.

These are with the 80-200 f4.5.

I had the film run at Walgreens and scanned the negatives on my Epson 3590.

I've got a 50mm f1.4 for my Sony DSLR that will almost get a picture in the dark.

Found it at the thrift shop too, LOL.

I've got a couple of manual focus f1.7 50s for my old Minolta bodies. There is so much old Minolta glass around that the prices are low. I've got old Minolta MC and MD lenses all over the place.

I take it you have a Sony Alpha? I’ve been looking at used ones - I don’t think I need more than 10mp or so - I rarely do enlargements bigger than 20” x 30”. Plus, I already have many Minolta AF lenses that would bolt right on. :)

How do you like your Sony?

I’ve got an A200 and love it. One great thing is that I can use all the old Minolta Maxxum lenses, I’ve got some great lenses for it.

Great find. I should have some pictures to share around somewhere as well. I’ve quite a few concerts lately.

Great find... With an autowinder to boot if I’m not mistaken! Please add me to your list, ‘Sniper. I always appreciate your sharp eye - in the thrift store as well as in the field.

Done!

The little Pentax winder is a thing of beauty in itself, very well made. Me Supers are common, this SE (special edition) seems scarce. The difference is only in the focus screen, the super uses a horizontally split spot but in the SE it's diagonal

I set out to just collect a few old Minoltas but that idea is out the window, LOL

Thanks for the ping SS. Great find. I remember those type of cameras at the Px in S. Korea circa 1966-68. Everybody wanted them it seemed, but most bought stereo equipment on their tours of duty at the time. I did the stereo route as well, and I remember buying a Winchester 30-30, and sending it home too, but not the camera.

I recall there was a camera with a windup advance. It was a point, and shoot sort of affair I think by Kodak. Did an OK job, so I used that until the windup spring sprung, and flew off in multiple pieces. It was cheaper LOL.

Those pics are perfect examples of why I still have my Pentax Spotmatic II and my Asahi (Pentax) Lenses(1). That was the first SLR I owned. I 'could have' traded it in when I stepped up to my Nikon FE but I just couldn't part with it. And yes, the Pentax was built like a tank.

Finding a non Mercury Battery was a problem for a 'few' years, but no longer. It's up and in working order again.

(1) Plus with the M42 Universal Mount, 'off brand', but good lenses like Vivatar where affordable for a young whippersnapper :-)

I have a Canon Elan IIE SLR film camera that I was thinking of Ebay-ing. Got replaced with a digital this year and the old EOS lens works great on both the film and the digital versions.

But maybe I’ll keep the film SLR. It did take great pictures and I had a nifty AA battery pack attachment which gave it good heft and a very comfortable hand hold, especially when taking vertical views.

It was hard to take a bad picture with that rig. Haven’t tested the new one enough to compare it with the old.

*** If I recall, those older ones were able to operate even without a battery. ***

Correct.

The battery served only two functions; Operate the Metering System and for the sync to the Hot Shoe for your electronic flash. But if your battery went dead all you needed was a small, inexpensive, hand held light meter and you were good to go on Manual.

I have a small Meter - 'somewhere' - that could slip into the Hot Shoe. It's about the size of a Zippo Lighter. It's a Vivitar (iirc) and I paid about $20.00 for it 'way back when' and not being able to find it now is driving me nuts. I have a whole bag of 'stuff' that went 'missing'. A mini tripod's in there, various 'speed lights' I bought, shutter release cables, lens filters, and that light meter.

(1) I'm 99.95% sure the wife put that 'extra' Gadget Bag in the Crawl Space and that's like entering a Black Hole. For my stuff anyway, her stuff she can always find. Not that I'm complaining :-)

I had a Pentex with the screw mount and my daughter dropped it in the surf across from Eureka. I still have the K2 replacement with several lenses and filters but never use it. My hobby is collecting old photo post cards of places in Humboldt County Ca...

I am a music producer...and once in a Thrift Shop I got an Audio Technica Studio Condenser Microphone, AND the necessary pre- amp. For $6.00! Then I asked for my “Senior Citizen” Discount and it became $4.50!

When my buddy saw it and found out how much I paid for it, he split his sides laughing. The 10 year old sales slip was still in the box, and ten years ago it retailed for over $300.00!

I LOVE that place!
:-)))

Another attendee remarked that I was wasting my time because none of the pictures would turn out...

I laughed at that story. There is a whole generation of people now who have no idea what you can do with a real film camera and the far better quality of pictures.

spending a few bucks on junk

Ah- but wonderful junk. Not all junk is junk.
Not to mention getting outdoors enjoying the beauty that is there. I for one thoroughly enjoy your pictures.
