Anthony Bourdain: Paula Deen is 'most dangerous person to America'
Chicago Tribune News ^ | Aug 19, 2001 | Hal Boedeker

Posted on 08/19/2011 3:08:40 PM PDT by Harley

That Anthony Bourdain sure knows how to get people talking. The "No Reservations" host sounds off on other food stars in TV Guide Magazine.

He has the strongest words for Paula Deen. "The worst, most dangerous person to America is clearly Paula Deen," Bourdain says. "She revels in unholy connections with evil corporations and she's proud of the fact that her food is f------ bad for you [...] plus, her food sucks."

Well the guy forgets that what she cooks is based on what is cooked in the American south.

IMHO, she makes a mockery of Southern cooking. She has become a parody. I'm sure her origins were true Southern cooking but what she has done is turn it into a big joke. The time she iced a cake with lard I almost threw up.

America would save untold billions in social security and pensions if more people ate Paula Deen’s cooking. I mean, c’mon! Every kitchen needs a commercial-grade deep fryer!

The way y’all are talking make me shudder! The only thing I eat deep fried cookin’ are okra and french fries with peanut oil!

So — I don’t cook like Paula Deen, either, but I don’t begrudge her her choice of recipes. What’s with the putrid attack? The guy’s way off base here.

Now these two lasses no how to cook

Best shift to the past tense.

Jennifer Paterson died in 1998 of lung cancer (she was a chain smoker, as often featured on the show). She did love her butter, lard, and beef drippings - but not lentils (those who watched the show may know that reference).

Proof that in America, people will get nasty and argue about anything, no matter how irrelevant and inconsequential.

>>If I had the choice of spending one day with him sampling foreign restaurants or cooking with Paula Deen (I turn off Paul Deen within fifteen seconds), I’d pick Bourdain. But I think one day would be as much as I could handle.<<

A agree with that. She is totally plastic. At least Bordain doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what he is. And I think arrogant, self-absorbed SOBs are interesting people to be around. That is why I keep myself around ;)

That would be Tom Bodette(SP?).

Funny author too. I’ve read a few of his books.

“I’m Tom Bodette and we’ll leave the lights on for ya”

I don’t know about Paula’s cooking, good or bad, but I do know that Tony, is a stumbling falling down drunk, and would say anything to hurt anyone just for a few lines of publicity.

I like the locales he goes to and can tolerate his show...but that boy is one big asshole. That’s right, I typed ‘asshole’. It fits.

Paula Dean was on Fox and Friends this morning and I was laughing so hard I could hardly breathe when Paula, with the greatest of good humor - and in her famous Southern drawl responded to Bourdain's outrageous comments, saying,

" I don't know if it was a publicity thing or if someone had just peed in his cereal bowl that morning and he was mad......."

Priceless!

Well the guy forgets that what she cooks is based on what is cooked in the American south.

Only loosely.

I am Southern from way back, with a family that merges several cooking traditions -- the "Pennsylvania Dutch" German cooking of Irma Rombauer's Joy, Southern Piedmont cooking as done in the old days by live-in cooks, and Southern Coastal cooking with heavy emphasis on seafood. I've made forays into Thai and Indian cuisine, and I love northern Italian food, but the Southern stuff is still the daily standby.

While Deen's fried chicken is impeccably straight up (though I could live without the CUP (!!!!!) of hot sauce in the beaten eggs), a lot of her recipes add a whole lot more butter, mayonnaise, shortening, and sour cream than I'm used to (in fact, some of them add ALL of them - ick!)

And her desserts are much heavier on the fat than I think is customary in Southern cooking.

I’m surprised Paula didn’t employ the “Bless his heart...” expression of southern contempt and castigation (she’s old enough to have the proper intonation for this locked and loaded, which makes all the difference in the meaning).
