Sexist men and women - made for each other

New study suggests that sexist women with a preference for casual sex are more likely to respond to men's aggressive strategies

Men with a preference for 'one-night stands' and negative sexist attitudes towards women are more likely to use aggressive courtship strategies. They compete with other men who are also interested in the woman, tease the woman, and isolate her away from her friends. In response, women with a preference for 'no strings attached' sex and negative attitudes towards other wom-en are more likely to respond to men's aggressive strategies. These findings by Jeffrey Hall and Melanie Canterberry, from the University of Kansas in the US, are published online in Springer's journal Sex Roles.

Hall and Canterberry set out to understand the characteristics of men who use aggressive court-ship strategies, based on speed seduction techniques described in the US bestseller "The Game" by Neil Strauss and the popular cable TV program "The Pickup Artist". They also studied the cha-racteristics of women who find such strategies appealing.

The researchers conducted two surveys. The first pilot study surveyed a sample of 363 college students from a large Midwestern university in the US. The second, larger national study recruited 850 adult volunteers via the internet. The authors asked both male and female participants about their sexist attitudes toward women and whether they were willing to take part in uncommitted or short-term sex. They also asked about the extent to which men used assertive strategies to in-itiate relationships and the extent to which women found these approaches desirable.

So... they needed a study to find that men who want a one night stand actually do “better” with women who like one night stands?! Go figure?!

I wonder how much we paid for this study.

So, are these ‘sexist attitutdes towards other women’ the same as the view of conservative woman as ‘self loathing Stockholm syndrome’ that women like Janeane Garafolo spews about?

We could do a “study”, Fast Moving Angel! Let’s see: men who want one night stands do “better” with women who are intoxicated. Or, men who want one night stands “score” more often with women wearing next to nothing in terms of clothing. Or, men who want one night stands find that Christian bible clubs aren’t great for meeting women who want one night stands. How much should we charge?! LOL!!

People like Garofalo are of no consequence other than for the reactions they produce.

If a lot of men didn't find the techniques workable, the books and shows wouldn't be so popular, now wouldn't they? And the techniques wouldn't be found workable if there wasn't a sizable population of women on whom the techniques worked.

AA meetings are a great place to pick up one-nighters. Or so I’ve been told...

Wow, even when I was 8 years old, I was already trying to get laid and didn't even realize it! I went around teasing girls and pulling their hair all the time. It never seem to work though, and I would have probably run away in terror if it would have.

I NEVER responded to guys who hit on me. I don’t know why, but it always made me seriously uncomfortable.

I much preferred to get to know the males around me, then I chose the guy I was interested in. I gave signals that I was interested and if he responded, then we’d date and see if we were a match.

Strangely, my husband was not one of the guys I was interested in. He’d never approached me, but I thought he was just too aggressive. He swore too much for my tastes. Too big. Growled too much. Intimidating.

One night, I was at a social function on our college campus. Two guys were trying to ‘herd’ me into a private place. I tried to moved away from them, but they became very persistent, started actually pulling me away from the crowd and I felt seriously threatened.

I slipped away and moved to a more populated area and they followed me.

I looked around the crowd and found the biggest, meanest guy that I knew. He was perched on a bar stool with his legs spread. I walked right up to him and right into his arms. I was nearly crying when I pulled his head down and whispered, “There are two guys following me. Please put your arms around me and pretend that I’m with you!”

He was shocked at first, then broke into a huge grin and snuggled me right up. He asked me where the guys were and I described their clothes. The two men actually came quite close, but he glared them away. He held me like that for about a half an hour (I was clinging to him like a terrified monkey the whole time) without saying a word - and without copping any feels - then walked me safely back to my dorm room.

That was the first time either of us started to see the other in a romantic light. About a week later I invited him over for coffee.

(He told me later that he loved the whole thing. To find his arms suddenly filled with cute girl, to get to be the hero... it blew him away.)

As imposing of a figure that he cut, I would’ve been *seriously* turned off had he made a pass at me.

Hint ladies: GOOD guys have a touch of the White Knight. Guys who make aggressive advances - who don’t know you - are only interested in your body. If a guy knows you, he might actually be interested in YOU as a human being.

What a great story! I’m like that too, it takes me weeks to decide I like a man. Sometimes months. I can’t date at all anymore because nowadays, men seem to seriously expect to get laid by the third date.

Makes sense. If you can't drink or do drugs, what's left ... rock and roll?

LOL!! Alcohol can only do so MUCH to improve the appearance of another person. I don’t even think our beloved Laz... if one held a gun to the poor man’s head would do this!!
