Too many TV programs and movies about super cops (no such thing), too many programs about SWAT teams, to many police programs glorifying police in general (most deserve it, but not to the point of glorification). When you glorify any job, the nuts tend to want to become part of that scene.

Just let the police do their jobs without all they hype, and 99% will do their jobs and do them right. JMHO

Well the normal police response when they shoot a tail wagging puppy is, “The office felt endangered and was protecting himself”. I wonder if they will use the same excuse for shooting Sylvester.

Give the officer a break. He probably mistook the cat for a Labrador Retriever.

I figured that this was the next step in gun control.

Special (Mr.) Ed (Sargent) Schultz shot his own dog while under the influence.

First they shot the dogs and I did not speak out — because I did not own a dog.

Than they shot the cats and I did not speak out — because I did not own a cat.

Than they shot the hampsters and I did not speak out — because I did not own a hampster.

Than they shot ...

Thanks for your response. But I disagree on the percentage of LEO’s that want to do their job. I think the standards have dropped pretty low. But I really do thank you for your service.

I base my percentage on my experience as a police officer. Back in the day, most joined for the experience, many stayed because they believed in what they were doing. Some for the early retirement. Much like the military.

Many join, few stayed unless they really believe in what they are doing. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule.

I continued as police officer, not for any ego thing, but because I felt I was making a difference, otherwise I would have retired after 20.

As for standards dropping, mayhap you are correct. Most of the cops I have had interaction with since retirement are not the cream of the crop of America.

It’s not a easy job, like I have. There’s nothing more precious than a honest cop. My thanks.

I don’t think it’s really that serious. I’m sure there are many more times cops ghetto rats have encountered dogs people and NOT shot them in the same time frame than have. You only hear about the times a dog was shot.

ONE unnecessary occurrence is too many.

There maybe an upside to this one, if they're being used at the time.

All cats run away from strangers? This 20 pound cat must be rabid?

I don’t think so.

The cat could have been hurt after being struck by a car, fight with a dog, or any number of reasons other than rabies.

Too many cowards scream “rabid” anytime they see an animal.

And when visiting ,I have had numerous cats approach in the same manner as a friendly dog, just wanted to be petted.

The Lebanon police chief ought to be fired for using a manual in conflict with Ohio state law,and for that manner the city attorney should be dismissed for not ensuring the city was in compliance with state law. They are paid to enforce law not make up their own. If it was my cat I would be demanding the Ohio state police or attorney general’s office investigate the police department and I would demand the officer be charged for violating state law.The state police typically don’t like arrogant small town cops.
