DENVER (AP) — Health officials have issued a warning for cantaloupes from a revered melon-producing area of the U.S. state of Colorado amid a bacteria outbreak blamed for four deaths in the state and New Mexico, troubling farmers who depend on sales of the fruit.

The warning from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention came after numerous cases of a strain of Listeria were reported in six states, including at least 11 from Colorado, 10 from New Mexico, two from Texas, and one each from Indiana, Nebraska and Oklahoma.

Addendum to my post #3.

There were always deaths from food poisoning, and there will always be deaths from bad food. Both biological and chemical causes abound. No system can be perfected, and American agriculture is no exception.

However, consider that of the tens of millions of cantaloupes eaten by many tens of millions of Americans, only a dozen or two were sickened, and the couple of deaths were probably people with compromised health before their canteloupe consumption.

Modern food production has given America the worlds best and cheapest food. Unfortunately, it falls on the consumer/voter to prune the poisonous bureaucrats in Moscow on the Mississippi (Dept. of Agriculture).

This is terrible reporting by AP and brings back the MAD COW scare. How is the Listeria transmitted ?

This report by S.K.Paulson implys simply by eating of the flesh of the fruit itself one contracts the disease . When it might be neutralized by washing the skin of the fruit with a mild solution of water and bleach.

Is Yahoo who’s in trouble making some noise

And Listeria is one of the most common bacteria in food. This is like saying there’s rust in your bike and therefore you’re in danger of dying in a crash once it snaps in two.
