ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - A pet rabbit is being credited for saving its owners from a house fire in southeastern Alaska before it died of smoke inhalation, fire officials said on Friday.
The rabbit woke up the homeowner early on Tuesday morning by scratching on her chest, the Ketchikan Fire Department said in a statement.
The homeowner realized that the house was full of smoke, woke up her daughter and fled the house.

While there were no injuries to the mother or daughter, the rabbit was not so lucky. The animal succumbed to smoke inhalation and did not survive, the fire department said.

that happened to me once......along came #5. Came into the house and hubby said “Well”. I said the rabbit died..we both had a drink and got over it. :O)
And how did that rabbit get on her chest? This story is weird. Rabbits poop pills indiscriminantly. Her house must’ve been a nightmare. Did she sleep with the rabbit?
I am sure this rabbit was no different than a favorite and beloved dog or cat.
This is a sad story and yes, the rabbit was “heroic” in sensing something bad and alerting its loved ones.
I am 100% sure the family shed tears and may still be hurting at hearing of their pet’s demise.
It has been years since I lost my beloved kitties Neysa (at 18 people years) and Musica (at 26 people years) and I mourn them to this day.
Scratching her chest??
My mini-lop warns us that the deer outside the sliding glass doors are eating the plants, by thumping.
Thump, thump thump, just like Thumper of Bambi fame.
Wonderful, wonderful trained pets, but not for small children.
“Petey” has no “chest” but liquor boxes with access holes become a deconstruction zone, with lots of fun ripping noises!
Prelude to #6?
Maybe the poor rabbit had already inhaled too much smoke to live before awaking its ‘parents.’
We have a bun bun. This makes me sad while at the same time happy that the brave little rabbit was able to save lives before it died. Poor baby.

Rabbit ping, my little lagomorph.
I dare you not to get misty.
I never liked rabbit since then.....gg

And, I forgot to mention that Petey has never been in a cage: he uses his litter box, and puppy pads next to his litter box.
For the most part he is very clean, and cleans himelf, but I’m sure that the banana/pear/apple treats we give him cause looser bowels.
Upon being on-chest hugged, he lays there and grunts his approval, as he gets totally zoned out like he’s at a zen institute. Wakes up and starts licking you.
Just a wonderful companion!
True but tangentially meaningless story:
I was once editor of a magazine. On my first day of work, some stupid memo was handed to me that everyone needed to inital after reading. One fellow employee had the initials L.A.G., which she dutifully wrote at the bottom of the memo. I saw that and thought of lagomorphs. So instead of writing my initials, I wrote Lagomorph and passed it on.
Thirty minutes later the publisher walked into the large employee-filled office and demanded to know who wrote Lagomorph. I looked up at her and said, "I did."
She stared at me for about ten seconds, sighed, and walked out of the office.
I stayed there for nearly ten years before the magazine finally went under.
Pity Jimmuh never got the mesage.
Rabbits can be litter box trained.
“I’m sure that the banana/pear/apple treats we give him cause looser bowels.” - happens to us all.
Oh my, I had a pet rabbit that was litter trained. Only had one really big problem....it was chewing on our electrical chords.
We had a litter trained rabbit named Flopsy. At age 10, she ate the Easter eggs that the Easter Bunny had hidden in the living room. Chocolate is poisonous to rabbits and while it did not immediately kill her it caused serious personality changes. She went from very sweet to mean and died a few months later.
A friend of ours had one that chewed an electrical cord and was shocked so badly it blew the enamel right off the rabbit’s teeth.
