Gen X stymied by baby boomers hanging on to jobs

NEW YORK -- In Tiffany Spaulding's 12 years in the pharmaceutical industry, she has worked for three companies, two of which no longer exist, and relocated to four states.

Now 39 and living in Brookfield, Conn., she hasn't had a promotion in five years and says she sees no chance to advance, stuck behind a wall of baby boomers. She would quit and turn her hobby of jewelry design into a business, she says, if not for the home and school loans that eat up half her salary.

Spaulding, according to a new report, is a typical member of the relatively small group called Generation X, 46 million Americans born between 1965 and 1978: They're ambitious, squeezed by debt and frustrated by people who aren't retiring on schedule. More than a third hope to leave their jobs in three years, a survey of more than 1,100 members of Generation X by the Center for Work-Life Policy found.

She’s 39. She has almost 30 more years before she reaches retirement age, if they don’t raise it by then. The Boomers will be gone long before then. She has the biggest problem for all Gen X’ers: a lack of patience. And worst of all, when she is 57 or so and refusing to move out to pasture for the younger workers because she needs things like food, shelter, and health care; she won’t remember her angst today about those people ahead of her refusing to die on her schedule.

Every generation has one ahead of them blocking the meteoric rise they think they deserve and one behind them wishing they’d die or go away.

If Boomers get in the way, Gen-Xers could simply just kill Boomers, 'en masse. You know, stack dead people up like cord wood when they become inconvenient. After all, people like Spaulding are entitled.

I disagree with that first part, but that’s a different story.

well, whatever the reason, they're the lamest bunch of snot-nosed crybabies and bad-seeds that's come down the pike in a long time.

At least the next batch can blame ritalin.

Boomers have to keep working because they can’t afford to retire.

And because their damned Generation 'X' offspring won't move out of their basement.

“Why are they the lamest generation?”

Because they think their problem is the previous generation, when really it’s the fact that they’re all still paying off student loans at age 39, like the woman in the article.

The Boomers have a lot of negative qualities, but they didn’t come out of college 100,000 grand in debt. Or take out mortgages they had no hope of repaying.

Gen X algebra: Entitled + (seeing yourself as a vicim) x (looking for someone else to blame) = Lame
