Jon Stewart’s Guide to the 100 Other Places in the U.S. Named ‘Niggerhead’

The revelation yesterday that a West Texas hunting camp used by the family of Rick Perry was named "Niggerhead" drew widespread outrage. The name is terribly offensive, of course, but is it also rare? That was the question on Jon Stewart's mind tonight during a Daily Show segment featuring Wyatt Cenac "on location" near New York's recently renamed "Nigger Lake."

It just goes to illustrate the hullabaloo about Rick Perry and the hunting camp used by his family named "Niggerhead" was much ado about nothing. Notice the segment was televised live from "Nigger Lake. Would make a great location to hold the next KKK regional convention.

This is the plant which grows in TX, OK, and KS and which we grew up calling "niggerhead" 60 years ago.

I'd be willing to bet that Perry's hunting lease was named after this prolific plant. This picture is from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

And what do you call them today?

Black eyed Susan

The "niggerhead" name apparently refers to the seed head once the petals are gone.

The only time in my life I ever heard the word “niggerhead” was years ago in reference to some big rocks in a field. Sounds like this is the case at Perry’s hunting camp, also.

How come nobody has mentioned Brazil nuts?

I think it is funny that the phony hit piece on Perry from our friends at WaPo is now a laughingstock. These names are everywhere and to numerous to list. No one cares.

negerkusse - name of a cookie they had at the German markets in the early 70’s (seen as a SP4 in the 14th Cav)
although this means “Negro’s kiss” not “Negro’s head”

I've never heard the "blackeyed susan" called a "niggerhead" and remember it as a separate plant. Plus the scientific names are different:

Blackeyed Susan - rudbeckia hirta var. agnustifolia

Niggerhead - Asteraceae Gaillardia suavis

I repaired electronics on fishing boats in San Diego in the late 70s. One common piece of equipment on a tuna seiner is a hydraulically driven capstan that provides assistance for pulling up a heavy load using rope wrapped around the capstan. Most boats had a 5 inch version amidships. It was black. The colloquial name for it was "niggerhead".

One afternoon I was sent to fix the VHF radio antenna for the Nuttall Styris company in downtown San Diego. As I was wrapping up, a fisherman came to the parts counter. He needed a new niggerhead for his boat. A black salesman came to the counter to serve him. The poor guy stammered and tried every way imaginable to ask for the product without using the colloquial name. Finally, the salesman exclaimed, "Oh, you want a niggerhead". The fisherman looked very relieved. He simply couldn't bring himself to use the phrase. BTW, the fisherman was white.

A similar situation occurred some weeks later at the office. We had cans of small diameter rope soaked in gooey asphalt for the purpose of sealing deck flanges. The common term for the product at the office was "monkey shit". Somebody took the last can from the stockroom and left the purchasing agent flummoxed. I need to order 10 cans of "monkey shit", but I have no idea what the real name is.".

Here it is with the petals. They are sparce and don't last long leaving a ball which is rock hard. You can see how it got it's common name. My research says they are "fragrant" but I don't remember them having any smell.

Yes, I remember the incident quite clearly. Adding an extra “g” to Niger’s name was no mere accident.
