—Because if you don’t take they then go to the media and say you refused to take it.—

Reminds me of what a guy said about being interviewed by 60 Minutes. He said that they would twist your meaning so much that it was better for you if you let them report that you “refused to be interviewed” then for them to so mangle your interview to say what they want it to that it no longer resembles the meaning behind what you said.

“The facts are that if you are a baby and you get murdered, there is a 99.999% chance that mommy killed you.”

I think that is a little high. It is often also the father and/or the mother’s current boyfriend.

I don’t think kids are reading it on the news but I believe that it blares on radio and TV constantly so I believe they are seeing footage of the mother, photos of the child, interviews with police etc - watching it on TV.

I didn’t specifically seek the news casts as a kid but I might be in the room, on the floor, with the ‘Toons part of the newspaper spread out on the carpet before me as the evening news was read. I remember my mother being shocked by a news cast that showed a person breathing their last, by the side of the road following a police shooting. She was horrified that it was put on the news and that I was present to see it. But now parents are often not in the room at all.

I believe kids now see news clips and interviews with teachers who have sex with students or mothers who are believed to have harmed their own children. I just wonder what that does to the world of ‘expectations’.

Well, I don’t believe kids actually read the news...now or then. Did you?

I was about 8 years old when I read, in the newspaper, of a very young girl having a baby! I scared my folks to death by telling them I wanted a baby too! (That was about 5 1/2 decades ago...I barely knew the difference between “us” and “them!”)

My wife is an attorney and she says exact same thing and we have made it clear to our kids, never ever talk to the cops.

The video blew me away. He demonstrates, with real world examples, how even giving almost irrelevant (and harmless) information can kill you in court in ways you never imagined.

Deborah Bradley (the mother) could be described as doing exactly that on the news this morning. I haven't really been following this story but started to after I saw her because she tripped my hinky meter. Sorry to say, she's not being truthful.

I wanted to add a thought... hypothetically, if a child/baby is abducted (and the parents had NO involvement whatsoever) the stress/pressure of wanting to help find the child must be overwhelming. Even knowing that the police will automatically look at the people close to the child (i.e. the parents), the parents will still feel compelled to answer questions in hopes that they can save their child’s life. I think a child abduction case must be the trickiest time for the parents emotionally and legally.

She has seen cases, actually many, where a person is approached by the police as if they are a witness to a crime and with a minor inconsistency they are then then accused of the crime.

And once they sit you down and begin to ask you questions, you are screwed.

I honestly do not even know how I would handle such a thing. For starters, I’d most definitely go vigilante. No question. I’d consider the cops the competition.

And that's only outside the womb.

That is how you should treat it, imo. The guy in the video is talking to a room full of attorneys and laments that once they get their client, the client has probably already said WAY too much to the cops. If it ever happens to me (the conversation) I will require an attorney present before I will say a word.

Never talk to the police without a lawyer present. Simple as that.

That’s why in this specific type of case.... it would be difficult for the non-guilty parents to not talk to the police. Now, if a cop asks you something about a break in or another type of murder.. I can see saying nothing and going to a good attorney. However, if it is your own child’s life in danger... that is when it gets very tricky.

"Now it’s pretty much in the Court of Public Opinion, the parents are presumed guilty until proven innocent."

Could be that a high percentage (I'd guess 9 of 10) of these cases end up being a family member? People don't usually crawl into nursery windows and take babies.

Mark Klaus, father of a kidnapped and murdered Polly, advises to tell the police everything and offer to take a lie detector test immediately. His contention is that you need to get yourself out from under the umbrella of suspicion ASAP if you want to get your child found.

If you have something to hide ... anything at all ... you better call an attorney.

It always sets my meter off when the parents are sitting at home or giving press conferences, because if my child were genuinely missing I'd be beating the bushes and looking 24/7. They would have to interview me on the move.

Not for infant murders. Mother almost always is the murderer of infants. Check the DOJ stats.

I have friends who are attorneys and they all say they would never let their clients take a lie detector test.
