Ever find yourself not trusting something or someone from the first moment - but not knowing why?

Well that's what I thought the first time I heard about "cloud computing".
You know how you feel when Free Republic is down for a day? Lonely, lost, confused, angered, and out of contact? At least I do...
Now imagine that instead of Free Republic, those are your family photographs, recipes, games, daily planner, and other important documents that suddenly go *poof* when the cloud decides it’s done hosting your files.
Funny thing is, in big corporation IT, what comes around goes around. Things started with central processors and remote dumb terminals. Then the personal computer brought independent computing power to the desktop, freeing users from having to beg for processor time, or waiting days for a report to be run.
Now with this cloud computing model, you’re getting back to a more or less dumb terminal and a central processor ‘somewhere.’
it’s just a big fat external storage device. very handy. who owns it and/or whom they hire to maintain it (i.e. what nationality their employees are) is immaterial to the idea itself (good or bad; and actually it’s good and bad, imho).
good on you, though: a conservative ought to be suspicious of any push to centralize anything.
The point is letting mission critical applications and data out of your control.
For small organizations, they may have to go with that option with the understanding that if it fails they are out of business. The down-side risk is huge.
For any organization that can even afford one part-time IT person and their own servers I always recommend taking control of your own existence.

There is nothing in “cloud computing” that makes it a form of outsourcing for jobs.
There is more outsourcing involved in the manufacturing of computers and TVs and software development than it “cloud computing”.

It dawned on me, reading your post.
I wonder what proportion of true believers, the stubbornly “free trade” Republicans, are retired, and whose working experience was predominately when America stood down the Soviet Union, using more or less the same tactics China (and other nations) are currently using against America?
I’ve been baffled how it is, that Republicans. Who understand geostrategic issues more clearly than anyone else, can be so wrong about something so basic.
I’m starting to wonder, whether those still insisting “free trade” is good for America - don’t actually, need jobs?...
If only we actually had “free trade”... What we’ve had for the last 40 years has been highly managed trade, loaded with tariffs and rules and quotas and restrictions.
Maybe if we actually tried REAL free trade things would work better. Milton Friedman was a big champion of free trade - and he also designed the Chilean economy (at the request of - and payment from - Pinochet) and it’s working extremely well; it’s retirement system - also conceived and designed by Friedman - is held up as a model for the US to follow.
How about we actually try real free trade before you denigrate it? Because it’s pretty clear the highly managed and restricted trade we have now isn’t working.
If you don’t have your data, you don’t control it. Period.

My cloud contains all my applications (stopped paying Microsoft for their Office suite) documents, contacts, email, dozens of function-specific sites, forms, pics, calendars, resource management, member services, push notices and more.
It’s accessible 24/7 on any computer with an internet connection and is not OS, browser or device dependent. It syncs with my Macs, PCs and phones at home, work or on the road.
It’s reliable, user-friendly, secure, fully archived and ... um ...FREE.
You who are skittish of the cloud, feel free to burrow in your tech holes and pull the dirt in on top of yourselves. I’ve eulogized enough of you in my 26 years of replacing paleo-coots who resisted themselves out of market viability.
Your grandchildren’s entire education will be provided on devices you can’t even fathom and emanate from the cloud.
Well, when somebody gives you something for free, there is always a reason. They have to be getting something out of it because they have bills to pay. Sooo, what happens when people put stuff on a cloud and the cloud people can’t pay their electric bill??? Sooo, maybe it works fine for now, but I just spent $60 and bought a back up hard drive thingy with 500 gigs of space on it. Or maybe 460, who can tell??? Anyway, if the clouds blow away, I still have a cheap backup. Which I think is pretty common sense.
“Cloud” computing or storage may be thought of as outsourcing your computer’s processor chip or its hard drive. So unless you think that either is an American citizen, then no, it’s not about outsourcing American jobs.

Sooo, the real problem is maybe having to be able to log on the Internet to get your stuff and I have had problems before when there is a virus, and I can't download a fixy thingy because the virus keeps me from getting on the net. Sooo, it is maybe fine to use the cloud, and even back stuff up on it, but if all your stuff is there, and not any at home, OH will you ever be sooo TOTALLY SCREWED if you can't get on the net for some reason. Here is a good lesson on backups and systems and stuff. Don't be left saying "But. . .whocuddanode???:
“Cloud” is a slick marketing term for “really big building full of servers and other computer thingies”.
After an EMP, backups will be the least of our prOblems. I realize there are Freeple who are all set to live off the fat of the land. Mo powah to ‘em. I’m comfortable with my choice to survive in THIS world—not a post-apocalyptic one.
That is your choice, and probably you will never have a problem. And maybe building a bunker with indoor toilets like in Tremors is excessive. But what is the cost of a backup hard drive??? $60??? And I guess you could backup stuff from the cloud with one, couldn’t you???
