* This is the fifth consecutive lead story by Louis Stark, the labor relations writer. The strikes in the U.S. are overshadowing the war news. And there is a lot more to come.

** I don’t have any excerpts for today but there was one yesterday that refers to this article.

Weather halts German advance
Thursday, October 30, 1941 www.onwar.com

On the Eastern Front... Operation Typhoon halts until the winter weather arrives. The deep mud from autumn rains has immobilized the German vehicles.

October 25, 1941

"The Kovno Ghetto in Lithuania became one of the most infamous in Eastern Europe.
This photograph shows the Ninth Fort, also known as Killing Center No. 2, where about 50,000 Jews were executed.
After their deaths, the murderers pushed the victims into vast pits, which became mass graves containing as many as 3,000 corpses."

October 26, 1941

"Minsk partisans Volodya Sherbateyvich (left) and Masha Bruskina are hanged, October 26, 1941."

October 27, 1941

"The expressions on the faces of these Jewish women reflect the nightmarish conditions in the Minsk Ghetto in 1941.
The city was ghettoized in July, and soon the Nazis began to murder its Jewish population en masse.
About 12,000 Jews were killed on November 7, and 7,000 more were murdered on November 20."

October 28, 1941

"Workers from Kovel in the former Soviet Union embark on a freight train for an unknown destination.
Millions of non-Jewish workers from all across Europe were deported to Germany as slave laborers.
Without those laborers and Jewish workers, the German war effort could not have kept up as well as it did with the demands of the war economy."

UNITED KINGDOM: No. 607 Squadron RAF goes into action with the Hawker Hurricane fighter-bomber known as the Hurribomber. They will take over the ‘Channel Stop’ anti-shipping operations from No. 2 Group. (22)

Submarine HMS Tireless laid down. (Dave Shirlaw)

GERMANY:

U-378, U-594 commissioned.

U-602 launched.

U-640 laid down. (Dave Shirlaw)

NORWAY: RAF Hudson bombers have struck a body blow at the German Navy’s supply system in the northern seas. A raid on the Norwegian port of Aalesund is thought to have left six supply ships irreparably damaged. The Hudsons flew through driving snow over the North Sea to find a target lit by moonlight. One pilot described how he hit his target from 30 feet before flying across the town at rooftop height, firing machine guns. He then put incendiary bombs through a factory roof. Norwegians resent occupation more than the raids.

U.S.S.R.: The German advance on Moscow halts. Until winter fully sets in, the soft muddy ground will not allow them sufficient mobility to continue.

CANADA:

Minesweeper HMCS Drummondville commissioned.

Minesweeper HMCS Thunder arrived Halifax from builder Toronto, Ontario.

U.S.A.:

Destroyer USS Abner Read laid down.

Minesweeper USS Pioneer laid down.

Destroyer USS Laffey launched. (Dave Shirlaw)

Technically no, the US is not at war in October of 1941. As I understand it both the AF of L and the CIO signed no strike pledges after Pearl Harbor. However the UMW did have some labor unrest even during the war, but most of the big unions were quiet.

Besides, during the war, you had wage and price controls in place that made a strike over pay a non issue.

It was after the war, when the big industrial unions started to flex their muscle.

I was saying during when we were at war. Dock strikes come to mind, I think in 1943 or so. The US got people like Lucky Luciano to help in stopping them.

Luciano ostensibly had the boys make sure no sabotage, a la NORMANDIE occurred on the docks. The Mafia also supplied Union cards and other documentation for U.S Intelligence agents to infiltrate suspect businesses on the waterfront, and acted as an intelligence source itself.

Luciano also, allegedly, put the word out to the Sicilian Mafia to help the Allies when Operation HUSKY started. His initial intermediaries were Lansky, his lawyer, and ‘Socks’ Lanza. After he was moved to Great Meadows, Luciano may have met with Naval Intelligence reps himself.

Yeah, read history about that too. But somewhere I read it was the west coast docks. Then too, in Australia.
