A video from a Discovery channel special regarding the effect of music on a fetus. One baby in the womb is really getting down and grooving to the tunes. The other-- not so much.

I don’t know if I didn’t notice it with my other kids as I was busier when pregnant with them, but I did notice my oldest responding to loud music before she was born. One day in particular I was driving and ZZ Top was on the radio - I think it was “Sharp Dressed Man” - anyway, I could feel her kicking me along with the beat! It was a very strange sensation to say the least...
What BS is that? That fetuses can hear inside the womb, and respond to sound?
[I’m guessing you’re referring to the whole “babies who listen to Mozart are smarter” thing? If so, this video really had nothing to do with that theory... They were just seeing what, if any, effects the music had on the babies’ heart rate and facial expressions using 3D ultrasound.]
Actually, well established experiments have found that babies in the womb can learn, too. The experiments involved the startle reflex. When a baby hears a loud noise, it is startled and jerks in the womb. But if the baby hears the sound repeated over and over, even if there are lengthy intervals in between, the baby learns there is no threat and stops being startled by the sudden noise. That is some fancy trick for a blob of protoplasm don’tchaknow!
My mother must have been playing a lot of music back in the Seventies because I love the music of that decade.

No matter what the actual science is or isn't of this, I'd cut Zell a whole lot of slack:
a) Even if it was a boondoggle, it wasn't the most expensive boondoggle in the world, and
b) It shows that Zell recognized the humanity and value of the fetus as it develops in the womb.
The latter, especially for a "democrat", way outweighs any silliness involved.

Same here — except with late 60s rock (I was born in 1972). What’s interesting is that my daughter is definitely a fan of Classic Rock, as well as 80s “Hair Metal” which is what I pretty much listened to all the time 20 years ago... Her favorite group? Led Zeppelin - which I used to listen to a LOT when she was still in the womb... :)
That’s fascinating. Thanks for the info. To this day my daughter’s fave band is Led Zeppelin - I used to listen to their albums a LOT when I was pregnant with her. It’s really amazing how babies grow and learn in the womb. I’ve “grown” four of my own, and I’m still amazed by the miracle it truly is!
Interesting. I’m 66. My Mother listened to Beethoven and Mozart 78 records a lot while preggers with me. It soothed her worries listening to classical music after work at the Army Map Service. You see, she conceived me from a ‘forced encounter’. She didn’t believe in abortion. I was her third child yet it took forceps to drag me into this world. I was born only a few hours after the A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima (August 6th in Japan, August 5th in D.C.).
