Franco Harris fired for Joe Paterno comments
sportingnews.com ^ | November 16th, 2011 | Staff report

Franco Harris has been an outspoken supporter of Joe Paterno in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse allegations.

So much so that Harris, a Pro Football Hall of Fame running back who played for Paterno at Penn State, was fired by The Meadows Racetrack and Casino as a spokesman, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. The racetrack is located in Washington, Pa., just outside Pittsburgh.

Harris publicly expressed his displeasure over Paterno's firing last week.

“I feel that the (Board of Trustees) made a bad decision in letting Joe Paterno go,” Harris said, according to the paper. “I’m very disappointed in their decision. I thought they showed no courage, not to back someone who really needed it at the time. They were saying the football program under Joe was at fault.”

The Meadows issued this statement:

“In light of the recent developments with Franco Harris regarding Joe Paterno’s dismissal, Franco and The Meadows have mutually decided to put their business relationship on hold at this time, while these matters are looked into further.”

Harris was hired last month to assist the track with "outreach activities, charitable events and public appearances," the Post-Gazette noted.

Franco is not a big fan of little boy’s rights, is he? BMOC has been away from the little people a little bit too long, me thinks.

He was free to speak and they were free to fire him. Funny how that works. Course he had only been there a month - which probably made it easier to send him on his way. Oh well, there’s always another Casino/Dog Track.

From the article: “...Franco and The Meadows have mutually decided to put their business relationship on hold at this time...”

Fired or quit Franco doesn’t appear to be drawing a paycheck as a spokesman in this mutual agreement.

Even these Indians have scruples.

Even the gambling industry is provoked, eh?

"The racetrack is located in Washington, Pa., just outside Pittsburgh. "

Washington, PA is also Sandusky's hometown. I'm guessing the track is eager to disassociate themselves as much as possible.

You know the thing I don’t understand about this whole, sad, sordid story? If you knew that your friend was molesting little boys, would you still be their friend?

I heard Franco make supportive comments on a sports call-in show. Talk about clueless.

They were saying the football program under Joe was at fault.

He seems to have gotten the point, at least. Better verbal processing faculties than I'd expect from an old football player.
