For about a week now, in multiple browsers and from iPad and iMac, Free Republic has been deadly slow. Frequently it times out waiting to load. This is on FIOS at top speed, both wireless and wired. No other site is even slightly slow for me.
I don't see any other threads mentioning this, and I've posted to the yahoo group with no responses, so I am assuming it's me. What could I be doing wrong?
Or has this been your experience too?
What's up?
Might it also be Apple-specific browsing optimizations that turn into pessimizations when faced with the melange that is FR code. I do not have Apple hardware, but wonder if there is a way, under some Advanced option or tab, to enable or disable “optimizations.”
It is slow, especially when trying to post.
Oh, if nobody has pointed it out yet, this is a feature.
I’m about to go back to Opera.
Since I am a kindly soul who desires to help, may I suggest you register with Goodreads, the reading site.
Once you have two slow sites you will be balanced.
LOL! spoken like a true software weenie!
For what it’s worth, I use a Mac and iPad also (iPad at this moment). I am in upstate NY in a rural area with Frontier DSL. Free republic.com responds just fine, consistently. Except when it’s really down because the FR servers themselves are sick.
For some reason I can no longer Copy and Paste into the Reply box. Can't figure that one out, just started a few days ago.
Pick two. |
Weird thing about that , is I was going back in some archive posts about the life and times, of FReeper Tongue Tied, and I found that the old posts still have "how many times viewed" but the new post don't.
Infrastructure here has not kept up. It is sad.
Also, the clock is off by more than 10 minutes again, which is just unacceptable.

I get essentially identical results with FF on Mac, Safari on Mac, FF on Windows, Safari on iPad. FF on Linux and IE8 on Windows are slightly slower but not awful.
Is the ISP serving Yaelle a bunch of Democrats? I’m not entirely joking...
I only know enough to mock them!
I’m pretty sure traffic is way down since the Great Purges.
I’m using Opera and a PC. FR is slow for me when something’s broken and it’s slow for everyone, but not otherwise. The consistently slowest-loading site for me is Fox News.
forgot to add:
Average Load Time for Freerepublic.com
Slow (1.974 Seconds), 68% of sites are faster.
It’s cuz you voted for Santorum in that straw poll.
Comes up a LOT faster for us Gingrich and Perry supporters.
