MAN, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A one-sided relationship almost turned into fatal attraction Monday morning.
An elderly couple is recovering in the hospital after a brutal beating and shooting. Click here to find out more!
Relatives say it's all because of a 36-year-old mans obsession with the couple's teenage granddaughter.
Family members say they've had problems with Shawn Belcher before. They say they are relieved that this attraction didn't take a deadly turn.
Dewey Rose was shot in the face and his wife, Gaynell, was beaten so badly that police found her unresponsive on her kitchen floor.
Belcher, a former substitute teacher, was arrested and charged with daytime burglary and attempted murder.
WSAZ spoke with one who man only wishes to be identified as a relative to the victims.
We couldn't get her to talk, couldn't get her to move her hands, couldn't get her to move her feet, couldn't get her to move nothing, the relative said about Gaynell. It's over a 19-year-old girl that he thinks is in love with him.
Family members say Belcher had been stalking the couple's 19-year-old granddaughter for months.
The house she grew up in is surrounded by no trespassing signs after Belcher was arrested in December for forcing his way onto their property and refusing to leave.

Love to hear her side. What a messed up story. Glad to know that the couple doesn't have life threatening injuries, but their injuries certainly sound serious. God bless them.
“They say they are relieved that this attraction didn’t take a deadly turn.”
For the grandparents, it may yet. I hate to say it, but at their age, it’s likely going to be a long, slow recovery with a lot of if’s and maybe’s along the way.

“Belcher, a former substitute teacher, was arrested and charged with daytime burglary and attempted murder.”
Well, he may have been an actual school teacher at some point (some subs are). Having worked in that business for a time (substitutes are often hired through outside temp agencies), though, I gotta say the standards are generally pretty low. I saw a lot of flakes get hired to be substitutes, folks I wouldn’t have trusted to walk my dog. For the guy to be a “former” sub (probably not by his choice) suggests this guy was probably a real bottom-of-the-barrel type from day one.
Mmmmm. That reporter appears to have uneven boobs.
you are right but its a common affliction here bouts.
At least in this case the girl is 19 instead of 12 or 13.
Am more than tired of victims paying the highest price per crimes; by 'virtue' that they survived.
Wow. Vile mouth and a n00b nutter. Get some help.
According to police, 36 year old Shawn Belcher shot his parents neighbor Dewey Rose and severely assaulted Roses wife Gaynell.
Gaynell Rose is in the ICU unit at Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was flown by helicopter there after being transported to Logan Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
There is no word on Dewey Roses condition. Family members believe that a pair of false teeth may have partially deflected the bullet and saved his life. This has not been confirmed by law enforcement. Deputies did say the gunshot wound did not appear to be life threatening.
Belcher was allegedly was stalking the Roses’ teenage granddaughter, Kellyn Robinson.
Robinson lived in the house next to her grandparents and behind Belcher’s family home.
Family members say they’ve had problems with Shawn Belcher before. The house is surrounded by no trespassing signs after Belcher was arrested in December for forcing his way onto their property and refusing to leave.
Deputies say Belcher tried to commit suicide by cop and then resisted arrest.

Oh, that's completely understandable. Most of us joke about elderly people getting shot and beaten! My mistake, pal!
It's interesting how you attack the one who points out your stupid comment with your stupid, snobbish "n00b" label, as if you're on a grade school playground.
Fine. Tear your ass, buddy. I hope those grandparents will heal up just fine.
