CBS Houston ^ | January 24, 2012 | MATT HIGGINS, CBS

HOUSTON (CBS Houston) — A pet serial killer is on the loose in the Houston area.

Seven dogs were found dead, six of them pit bulls, over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Three of those pit bulls were fatally shot, while the other four dogs suffered blunt trauma to the head.

“We started finding an unusual number of dead dogs, all of them pit bulls,” Emily Crossley, founder of Backstreet Brutality & Relief, told CBS Houston. “Two were found on top of each other … another one was found shot in the head inside a crate.”

In Montrose I would have expected blacks there to scoot (sashay) with teacup Yorkies or Poodles..black of course.

Well at least out WALKING them there is a human being on the other end of the leash - mayhap a sorry excuse for one, but at least there is some measure of control and/or responsibility.

I have seen semi-feral packs that form up because they can easily break out (daily) from their yards to go out and roam - because their owners never walk them - and breaking out is the only way they ever get out.

In almost every serious dog mauling/death story I hear one or more of these criteria are met....

1) large and/or aggressive breed of dog
2) Running loose, often >1 running loose.
3) Prior reports of aggression from the dog(s).
4) Unrealistic expectation of passivity from owner, often despite #3 above.

Your criteria are generally accurate...however; people walking these animals around a residential neighborhood are just asking for trouble...so are the innocent people who live there.

You are right about the damage a large dog can do to a child- or adult for that matter. That is why it is wrong to focus only on pit bulls though- people should be wary around any combination of small child/large dog and not get hung up on the breed. Especially with so many mixed breeds around now, many times dogs identified as pit bulls, even by so-called experts (police, animal control, humane society workers) are not even pit bulls to begin with.

This is why in my opinion going to war against pits is foolish. We have livestock and have had issues over the years with bad dog owners allowing their dogs to roam free to chase our livestock and even maim or kill baby calves. We have always been at war with bad dog owners and large breed dogs running loose that can be a threat to our livestock. Also my dad was once attacked by a stray dog and my brother had to shoot the dog to save my dad. That dog was not a pit, some large mutt- if you had to give him a breed designation he looked more like a lab than anything.

The war needs to be fought against all bad dog owners, and to not allow any large dogs to be running loose- and be especially careful about any and all dogs/children. If this becomes a breed war the result will be bad dog owners will just get another breed, and they do already if not allowed pits. The worst mauling of a child I have personally known was done by the family’s Mastiff- some people couldn’t believe it wasn’t a pit- as if they are the only ones that can possibly do damage. A lot of people need to be educated about potentially dangerous dogs, and not zone in on pits.

Agreed. The aggressive traits bred into Pit Bulls can be bred into any breed - or accentuated in any breed that is already prone to aggression.

A ban on a particular breed is as short sighted as a ban on a particular model of rifle because it looks like an “assault” rifle.

your argument is full of holes

Pitbulls, pitmix and rotweillers account for 3/4 of fatal dog attacks. Pitbulls are also involved in 80% of off property deaths (meaning not protecting the home). If people are involved in activities that endanger the public, the government IS the responsible agent to police those activities. Requiring a license for dangerous animals is not unreasonable.

Again, if you want to own a dangerous animal that is your prerogative. However, I strongly believe that if your dog attacks someone you should be held FULLY accountable.

>>... I think they should be licensed just as much as other potentially deadly animals such as bears, big cats or wolves...<<

I’m not 100% against it, but I don’t think registering would do much to incent animal owners to be responsible. I *am* fairly certain the local govt would likely appreciate the associated taxs/fees.

I’d be happy with a simple *criminal* law with some teeth [pardon the pun] for “Failure to control your animal”. You can add 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree with or w/o bodily harm, etc-etc-etc, with correspondingly stiffer and stiffer penalties (monetary and/or jail depending on severity). Simply put as “failure to control”, the varying degrees could cover everything from incessant barking to killing someone and everything in between in addition to other charges (manslaughter, vandalism, disturbing the peace or whatever).

For every one bad animal you point out, there are countless good animals of the same type/breed that never will cause any problems. The one consistent aspect of every “bad” animal is the owner(s). In each and every case, they failed to maintain control of their animal whether it was on a leash, in a yard, or jumped a fence and got loose. Doesn’t matter if it was a lion, tiger, bear, gator, snake, dog, cat, hamster, or pet-rock. It is the owner that made the decision to have it and they need to have some criminal sword hanging over their head to incent them to be responsible and maintain 100% control over their animal 24/7/365.

Just my opinion.

All for it. "Failure to control" sounds good.

Uh...I live near 2 inner cities. One in NYC and one in NJ. I meant, of course, decent black people - mostly women and children - not rappers or criminals. Black criminals terrorize black children with those dogs. In turn, black children and women are often terrified of dogs in general.

Actually, there is a cult movie that I think is called White Dog. The dog is trained to attack black people. I’ve never seen it but have read about it.

For all I know, they may. I avoid Montrose like the plague (Aids).
