‘Doomsday Preppers’ Turn the Apocalypse Into a Hobby

Since when did prepping for the end of the world become a hobby?

In a sense, that’s one of the questions behind “Doomsday Preppers,” a new National Geographic Channel 10-part series that bows tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The show looks at more than a dozen Americans who have turned building bullet-proof shelters, stocking up on several years’ worth of canned goods and mapping evacuation routes into a kind of pricey game of one-upmanship. Whoever wins may be the last man (or woman) standing – literally.

But in another sense, the preppers don’t think of what they do as a weekend pastime. They see an end coming – be it because of a depletion of all the world’s oil or a shifting of the planet’s axis or a meltdown of the stock market. As a result, they simply follow the old scouting motto: Be prepared.

The show struck me as surprisingly open minded. They didn’t seem to be making fun of the subject.

My preparation for “Doomsday” is my belief in the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Saves on all the “overhead”.

But that is just me.

We all want to survive, but only a remnant will flow into the Millenium without experiencing physical death, IMHO.

Still, prepping is a natural extension of what we do every summer and fall to ensure survival for our livestock every winter.

In old Europe, that extended to our families as well. If you don’t prepare in a timely manner, you will die! It’s ingrained in our Western ethos.

Amazing what a few generations removed from the soil will do to a culture.

In the history of the world men and nature have often caused such devastation that people have cried out for the Lord to end it all.

Knowing that that would be the case maybe is why the Bible contains many such verse as:

“In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but the foolish man devours all he has.”Proverbs 21:20

“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.” Proverbs 6:6-8

A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. Proverbs 27:12

Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Timothy 5:8

It doesn’t seem too wise to broadcast to all and sundry what you have. If TEOTWAWKI ever happens (and it may very well not happen any time soon, or it could be tomorrow) you can be sure that anyone with a TV who is within a certain distance of said folk will be heading towards them.

I haven't seen it yet. Jokes aside about the topic, if the SHTF, it wouldn't be the first time it happened.

We've had pandemics.
Yellowstone has erupted. Lake Toba erupted. Volcanic Winter has happened in human times, as recently as 1815
Ice age. More recently, the little ice age changed climate
Mega-earthquakes.
Meteors and comets have hit the earth.
War is always a threat.

Be prepared. Most important asset if SHTF though is trustworthy people - friends and family. I'll be the hell away from the city and with good people protecting each other. I'm also good with a rifle.

Amazing what a few generations removed from the soil will do to a culture.

For some. I grew up on a farm. My family has owned/farmed land in this county since 1889. I was away for 25 years, but back 15. Ancestors farmed in other parts of TX before then, and in AL and GA before that. Not a "prepper' but have a garden, we have grain storage and processing equipment. We have our own meat processing building at the farm. We could be self sufficient if we wanted to. At this point it makes no sense. I greatly expanded our orchard and planted strawberry bed, blackberry bushes and grape vines last year during the height of the 100 year drought. Most survived because I watered them heavily.

We will get by. Have spent most of past 2 years taking care of sick elderly family. More of that ahead.

But on the political front, the very future of the nation and our way of life is in the results of the November 2012 election. I plan to be at the State GOP Convention. Past that??

Great Scripture!

Also remember Joseph telling the Pharaoh from his dream to store seven years of food for the coming famine.

Genesis 41

25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. 26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; it is one and the same dream. 27 The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterward are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind: They are seven years of famine.

28 “It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do. 29 Seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt, 30 but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land. 31 The abundance in the land will not be remembered, because the famine that follows it will be so severe. 32 The reason the dream was given to Pharaoh in two forms is that the matter has been firmly decided by God, and God will do it soon.

33 “And now let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man and put him in charge of the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. 35 They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food. 36 This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.”

37 The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials. 38 So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God[a]?”

39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.”

Asked them if they have a spare tire? A smoke detector? A fire extinguisher? A first aide kit? If they have any of these things their faith must not be that strong.

Also there is this if a disaster strikes and we haven’t prepare we will need to use the resources of those who come to provide relief and adding to their burden. So hasn’t such a person who could have provided for them self and who is now taking these resources ‘stealing’ from those who could not provide for them self or who has lost all? Is that an act of a believer?

This show makes us preppers look like absolute morons.

We were just starting to get some positive press, and then here comes this abomination of a show.

The only saving grace is that the majority of the people in this country don't get the NatGeo channel at home.

They have the normalcy bias.

You guys were exceptionally dry; we were on the edge of it, and folks around here were able to sell hay down into the drouth areas.

People gotta eat; country folks have always been survivalists without the label. Everyone else has the catching up to do.

When the ATMs aren’t working or the grocery store shelves are empty you be sure and log in here and let us know if Jesus stopped by with some cash and food for your kids.

I trust in the saving grace of Jesus. I also believe in the rapture with all my heart. If the rapture doesn’t happen before the apocalypse, so be it. My fate is in the hands of Jesus, not in stored weapons and food.

I believe in Jesus, too. But I know that he came to saw my soul, not my ass. That part is up to me.
