A veteran Orange County sheriff's deputy feared for the safety of two young girls sitting in a parked car when he shot and killed a Marine sergeant in a dark high school parking lot, authorities said Friday.
Sgt. Manuel Loggins Jr. was shot Tuesday as he started to get into the SUV where his two daughters ages 9 and 14 were sitting, authorities said.
Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Department, said the deputy was fearful that Loggins who he said appeared to be acting irrationally was about the drive off with the girls.
"The real threat that was perceived was the safety of the children," Amormino said.
"The deputy formed an opinion that he had a deep concern for the children, that he would not allow Mr. Loggins to drive away with the kids," Amormino said.
A former commanding officer said Loggins routinely went to the school during the early morning with his daughters to walk the track and read the Bible.
Amormino said that Loggins was not armed and that the incident doesn't appear to be alcohol- or drug-related.
About 4:30 a.m. on the day of the shooting, the deputy was doing paperwork inside his car near San Clemente High School when he said he saw Loggins driving a white Yukon at an "unsafe, high rate of speed" into the school parking lot, Amormino said.

They had a whole week to get their stories together and this cockamany story is the best they could come up with?
We shot a marine father to protect him from his kids? By shooting into the car with them?

“The real threat that was perceived”

The SUV, according to Amormino, crashed through a locked gate and the deputy pulled in behind him. From the picture on the webpage at the link; that SUV does not look like a car that crashed through a locked gate.

Amormino said that Loggins made statements to the deputy before he was shot. He would not elaborate. Sgt. James Chavis, 28, who also served with Loggins in Hawaii, said he was equally surprised.
"Manny was not one of those people who disobeyed commands," he said.
There's a whole lot of coverup going on here.

I'd also rate the LEO's story a solid "10+" on the "BS scale" but I wouldn't exclude "BS" from more than one source (plaintiff's counsel?). I can count the number of times I've gotten my daughter up at 4AM to "walk the track and read the Bible" or even "go for a morning jog on the beach" on .... well, on
no hands. I have never done that. Maybe the left coast rises particularly early to do things, and my understanding of California culture is minuscule-to-none, so of course I could be mistaken.
Getting my kid up at 4AM EST would be a project rivaling moving Mt. Everest to the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan. In one piece. It would never happen. Something is very, very strange about this incident.

Something smells about this story. I don’t believe a word of it. This was a school, are there no security cameras there? Let’s go to the tape...

Our kids wake themselves between 0430 and 0500 so they can be done with their schoolwork by breakfast. When living in So Cal, it was a beautiful time for us to go to the ocean - it is the only thing they miss about California.

No, it doesn’t wrecked at all. You’d think with those plastic bumpers they put on SUVs now that it would at least look dinged up.
