Weekly FR Boating Thread ~ Vol. 5 ~ Feb. 24, 2012 ~ Selling Your Price & Joy
41 posts last week were approaching planning speed...
I can guarantee you every boat will sell. We just dont know when, and for how much...
If you arent using your boat at least once a month (during boating season), sell it! (When you get the boating itch again, you can always buy another boat.)
The best way to sell a boat is to pretend it isn't for sale - clean it, fix it, use it, and then be pleasantly surprised when it sells. If timing is an issue, put it on the market @ 6 months before you really want to sell it.
It is easier to own no boats than two boats, so sell your current boat before you buy your next boat..
Boats are jealous mistresses - they like your time, money, and they do not like to be neglected.
If you havent shown your boat some love for a while, youll want to do so in order for your boat to sell. Have the engine(s) serviced, bottom cleaned/bottom painted, clean (not just drain) the bilges, clean and wax the topsides. Remove personal items, empty drawers and hanging lockers. Pretend you are prepping your boat for a boat show, which you are.
Smaller boats are more Spring season impulse buys. Larger boats sales happen twelve months a year. The sooner you put your boat on the market, the sooner it will sell.
Smaller boats generally sell locally with a higher percentage of FSBOs. Larger boats sell nationally/internationally with most sales made through yacht brokers.
Definition: Smaller boats can be hauled/stored on trailers. Larger boats live in slips or boatyards.
As the Dems like to sabotage the economy in election years to gain power, this year may be more challenging than most for boaters, but were all going to have fun afloat this year regardless!
Every boat is worth what a buyer and a seller agree to to the penny every time!

Lots of rain this week, so no fresh boating pics. Please feel free to post pics and videos of your boat(s), tales of your boating adventures and links to your nautical blogs here.
Please let me know how I can help you with your boating adventures, and if you would like to be added to the Weekly FR Boating Thread.

I’ve heard it said many many times the two best days for a boat owner is the day he buys his boat and the day he SELLS IT!
Weekly FR Boating Thread ping!
Selling your Pride and Joy theme.
80 degrees and sunny in Charleston today - my birthday - let the boating season begin!
If this is true - they definitely bought the wrong boat!
You can say as you haven’t sold it yet! ;-)
My brother recently sold his boat, I think it was a Catalina 24 or 27 (don’t quote me) to a fellow who insisted he did not need any kind of marine survey. The boat had been out of the water, on a trailer, for at least 3 years. My brother told the guy it was smart to get a survey, but the buyer simply insisted he knew all he needed to know about boats (even though he had never owned one before)
Fortunately, my brother wrote out a sales receipt stating that all defects had been disclosed and that he (seller) had recommended a marine survey prior to sale, and that if the buyer should forego the survey, it was entirely at his discretion. Furthermore, he made the bill of sale to be “as is, how is”.
Buyer bought the boat & trailered it back to his place. Discovered the engine was seized. He yelled and screamed and tried to guilt my brother into a money accomodation.
Didn’t work.
But If you get the right boat and can dry store it rather than pay slip fee's it is the way to go.
I would like to have a Wally Yacht but I own a P-Cat.
I am sick to death of the B.O.A.T. and “day you sell it” types. Do you feel that way about your wife? The guys who get in over their head on boats 1) borrow money on a depreciating asset, 2) can’t fix what they have themselves.
Guess what? If you can’t fix whatever it is 50 miles offshore in a storm yourself with what you have onboard, DON’T buy it.
Quick fix? Study the Boatowner’s mechanical & electrical manual, Dutton’s, and Chapman. Add everything by Bernard Gladstone and Watts if you can.
Please add me to your pinglist, sail on and fish ON!
We had no sailing experience what-so-ever but bought a 30' Rawson sloop at Gove's Cove on Lake Union in Seattle (the same place the the houseboat in "Sleepless in Seattle" was filmed). We found work at a resort up in the San Juan Islands at Deer Harbor, Orcas Island.
We ended up living on the boat for four years, cruising the waters from Tacoma to the upper end of Vancouver Island. It was a wonderful period and we still live off the memories. These pictures start early on with the boat out of the water for bottom painting etc. and end with the day we sold the boat, also at Gove's Cove:
I guess you can’t stay mad at each other for very long in a situation like that, eh?
:) There’s always the threat of the plank!
arrrrggg!
